Showing much riper fruit characteristics, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Spuntali offers dark fruit and blackberry backed by spice, leather and tobacco. This is a profound and powerful wine that is released as a Riserva with one extra year of bottle aging after the five years you get with a Brunello annata. The results are sophisticated and deep with many layers of fruit, spice and balsam herb. The wine feels young in the mouth thanks to the tight tannins and bright acidity. These qualities should help it age throughout the years. I like this expression because it delivers loads of fruit and power at the same time.

Good full ruby-red. Ripe yet elegant aromas of raspberry coulis, bitter chocolate, and smoky flint, complemented by a violet topnote. Silky and suave on entry, then remarkably steely and focused in the middle, if less expressive today than the other 2011 Brunellos from Val di Suga. Powerful yet delicate at once, with noble, polished tannins and repeating violet perfume on the long finish. Spuntali is the best 2011 Brunello from Val di Suga, though it offers less of the candied ripe red fruit aromas and flavors than is usual for this site; the vineyard is located in Montalcino’s south-west sector at about 315 meters above sea level on soils rich in sandy deposits.
