Deep golden color. Expansive, high and complex nose combines orange, kiwi, lemon-lime, sweet butter, papaya. Broad and rich, offering an array of ripe orchard and pit fruit flavors, with a gentle hint of acidity giving lift. Suave, creamy and very rich on the impressively long and deep finish.

A rich and flavorful fiano with dried apple, pear and lemon aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, round and delicious. Lots of cooked apple and tropical fruit character. Drink now.

Softly textured, full bodied, and fruity and floral in character; a wine with moderate richness, good balance, and a long finish, tasting of peach, honeysuckle, candied lime, apple, and apricot.

Bright dark yellow. Delicate, vibrant aromas of tropical fruits, pear and sweet spices. Then bright and fresh on the palate too, where the pineapple fruit is joined by gingery spices and minerals; boasts very good texture and richness but this wine strikes me as a less opulent and more restrained version of Cometa than some past vintages. A very serious, youthfully backward wine with a slightly bitter, saline finish, this will undoubtedly be better after spending a couple more years in the cellar.

The 2008 Cometa (Fiano) opens with an exotic bouquet of honey, tropical fruit and white truffles. This is a decidedly rich, textured white, yet all of the elements come together beautifully in the glass. Hints of passion fruit and pineapple linger on the finish... from Planeta, one of Sicily's better-known estates.

...wraps around the palate with juicy peaches, apricots, flowers and spices. Expressive tropical notes add volume and an attractive lushness on the expressive finish.

Cometa is a fantastic expression of Fiano from Sicily that reaches high marks in terms of purity, intensity and persistency. The wine is thick and smooth on the palate and imparts lasting flavors of stone fruit, honeydew melon and almond blossom.

Aromas of peach, honeysuckle and almond are irresistible but the wine really excels in the mouth where it imparts opulent density and richness. This wine is an absolute pleasure to drink. A beautiful Sicilian wine that would pair with shellfish, crab cakes or white meat.

Cometa is an irresistible white wine from the deep south of Italy. It speaks its own Sicilian language but with modern, international accents. Made from Fiano grapes, it opens with a beautiful golden color, and delivers rich aromas of stone fruit, vanilla cream and rose. The mouthfeel is exceedingly soft, creamy and long-lasting.

Among the greatest expressions of Fiano, Cometa is a full and generous effort, with deep layers of passion fruit and stone fruit, plus touches of vanilla, honey and light spice. The concentration and freshness is wonderful, and the wine would pair well with steamed lobsters or buttery crab legs.

Made entirely of Fiano, this full-bodied white is loaded with white peach, lemon drop, sage, rosemary and mineral sensations. It's round and juicy and will continue to develop complexity over the next few years.

Intense aromas of white peach, tropical fruit and Mediterranean herb lead the nose and follow through to the round palate alongside a mineral note. The juicy fruit is brightened and balanced by refreshing acidity.

Cometa boasts a brilliant, saturated golden color and carries through with clean execution in terms of aromas and flavors. Notes of tropical fruit and ripe citrus come into sharp focus thanks to Fiano's natural minerality. In the mouth, it offers plenty of weight, but balances that with great length of the finish, hinting at anise, honey, limes and oranges.

One of the best white wines to come from Sicily, and Italy for that matter, Cometa is a layered and complex warm-climate white with ripe and generous tones of mature peach, lemon zest, almond, pear, vanilla and honey that fit together in perfect harmony. It?s well crafted and beautifully textured and pairs with creamy lobster bisque.

Planeta's other great white wine In addition to Carricante, Cometa is made from 100% Fiano, grown in the Menfi region of Sicily. Fiano is an ancient Roman variety that has achieved fame in Campania, where it's known as Fiano di Avellino. But Fiano--one of Italy's finest varieties--also grows especially well in Sicily. The 2009 Cometa is a worthy follower to the outstanding 2008 Cometa. It is quite full-bodied, with a rich texture and flavors reminiscent of white peaches and tangerines. Fiano also has the well-deserved reputation of improving with age, although it's fine to drink now.

Flavors of floral melon, pineapple and citrus zest are ripe yet focused on a bright frame, as lemon curd, mineral and spice notes play out on the long, creamy finish. Fiano.

... Cometa '08 showed its great class and easily took Three Glasses. This white Fiano, whose beauty is already clear in its deep, straw-yellow, flaunts elegant hints of peach, tropical fruit and camomile. On the palate, it is engaging, mineral, fleshy, full-flavored, and wonderfully long.

Gambero Rosso
January 2010

Dark straw-yellow. Honeyed, mineral and green apple notes on the nose. Expressive and bright; lovely floral lift keeps the orchard and citrus fruit flavors light on their feet. Finishes long and bright, displaying a dusty phenolic quality but without coming off as dry; a lovely wine, but also a slightly less generous version of Cometa. From Fiano grapes planted on Menfi’s clay-rich soils next to the sea (the exact opposite of the calcareous volcanic soils of the mountains of Campania where Fiano was born), which are however historically well suited to white grape varieties. Since the 2006 vintage, Cometa no longer undergoes oak aging, gaining in precision and freshness but losing a little in opulence; still, it’s always an intriguing wine, combining the richness of Italy’s better southern white wines and the elegance of those from more mountainous northern sites.
