The 2006 Petite Sirah-Zinfandel is Petite Sirah dominated (80%), with the rest Zinfandel. It is a charming wine, aged for 8 months in a blend of American and French oak. It is easy going... easy to like and flavorful, one of the wines I initially liked most from Recanati. Its Petite Sirah vines reach 30 years in age. There are notes of game once past the oak overlay and some intensity on the finish. This is pretty respectable and may age better than seems apparent on first taste. It is typically the wine in the lineup that I think is rather underrated and overlooked. This will appeal more to Rhone drinkers than California drinkers, I suspect, not withstanding the blend and the initial hit of oak.

The 2007 Petite Sirah - Zinfandel Reserve, up to 90% Petite Sirah this year (from 30 year old vines), shows its American oak at the outset (it was aged in a combination of French and American oak), but it is sexy and delicious, and the oak integrates rather well. With air, some brambles comes out and it shows surprisingly good acidity, a good demeanor and some character... it is a pleasure to drink, easy going and very tasty, another good example of the winery's nice work with Petite Sirah. It will likely be at its best in the earlier half of its useful life, but should hold decently.

...A blend of 70% Petit Sirah and the rest Zinfandel, it was aged solely in American oak, which has mostly and happily been absorbed. Still vibrant and bright, it is quite tasty, although with air it does show some mature nuances. It drinks nicely now, but it likely does need drinking in the near future. For the status and level of this wine, projecting it as a 10-year bottle is a pretty good result...

The 2011 Petite Sirah-Zinfandel Reserve is often a charming, good value option from Recanati. As the brand has developed, it has essentially become a Petite Sirah & there is only 5% Zinfandel lately (as recently as 2005, it had 30%). This year shows the same tasty fruit as always, but there is also notable acidity, some tannic pop and generally good structure as well, along with some hints of vanilla and blueberries. It is quite gripping on the finish...

The 2014 Petite Sirah Reserve is 100% Petite Sirah, an old vines, high-altitude bottling. It was aged for eight months in a mixture of American and French barriques (60% new, the rest used). It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. The price of this has crept up a bit, but if it is not quite the bargain it was in some years, it is still a very nice wine. Laced with a bit too much oak on opening, it ultimately pulls in some of those nuances with aeration and resolves into a more focused red with some tightness on the finish. Always a bit creamy, it rises above that and ultimately drinks great. This can still improve with a year or so in the cellar. If you can give it that time, the effort will pay some dividends by letting this pull in oak and moderate some tannins. It can be approached now with some aeration, if you must dive in.

A heady, woody and earthy offering from Recanati that offers loads of bramble, dark cherry and black plum aromas and flavors. Fresh and vibrant with a juicy core livening up the mediumweight mouth. Cherry skins and fresh coffee stay through the close.

This is a jammy and plush selection that shows great intensity of flavor and weight. Dark notes of black plum, blackberry and boysenberry flood the nose and mouth, with secondary tones of toast and chocolate. Thick and mouthcoating on the palate, this ends with a woody, chocolate-kissed finish.
