Bright red. Red berry, plum and mineral aromas and flavors are complicated by musky coffee and herb nuances plus a riper chocolate note. The fruit flavors and herbal tones play well off each other in the middle palate, leaving a sweet impression on the long, spicy finish. This is deeper and richer than the Etna Rosso but also sweeter and smoother, and with broader international appeal.

The 2013 Sicilia Carricante Eruzione 1614 is absolutely spectacular and very reflective of its evident volcanic origins. The bouquet presents itself in clear layers. First are the drying mineral tones with lingering notes of ash and smoke. Once those lift, the wine warms up to peach, melon and candied orange peel. The layering is seamless and the wine builds momentum in the mouth thanks to its long persistency and balanced consistency. The drinking window here is generous and the wine should evolve further.

A well-meshed, medium-bodied red, with chewy tannins and savory hints of bay leaf and tarry smoke playing off the spiced plum, crushed raspberry and orange zest notes. Offers a lasting, minerally finish. Drink now through 2024.

The 2014 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 is a drier and more mineral-driven expression compared to its peers. The bouquet delivers an immediate and wide array of volcanic characteristics with ash and crushed-sulfur stone. The mouthfeel is linear and tight with fine tannins that are silky and long in terms of mouthfeel. The wine is excellent, but I am surprised by the subdued presence of primary fruit in a vintage like 2014 that is recognized for its exuberant blackberry and black currant aromas. I am assigning a slightly shorter drinking window as a result.
