While some Sicilian wineries are just starting to penetrate the American market, MandraRosso and Planeta are two labels that are available now and provide excellent introductions to the quality wines of this historic island. Those who prefer red will like the Planeta La Segreta Rosso produced from indigenous Nero d'Avola grapes blended with merlot, syrah and cabernet franc. This fruit-forward wine with soft tannins provides the ideal complement to special dinners. Reserve the Planeta Rosso for meals that include risotto, lamb and grilled meats.

...the star of Planeta's line is La Segreta, a $15 gem that blends 50 percent Nero d'Avola with 25 percent merlot, 20 percent syrah and 5 percent cabernet franc. Again a sea breeze comes to mind, this time carrying perhaps the smoke from a bonfire on the beach: a jumble of wood flavors tossed on the flames, plus plums and cherries, and did I mention the smoke? It's a slurry of aromas and flavors that would make no sense as a recipe ingredient list, but they come to mind in a rush as I explore this wine in the glass. The wine is a delightfully elegant charmer that seduces right from the start.

The Washington Post
April 2009

The 2007 La Segreta Rosso is 50% Nero d'Avola, 25% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Franc. Medium in body, this fresh, vinous red reveals nice plumpness and length in a generous, soft style.

Wine Advocate
August 2008

A great value wine from Sicily present on restaurant lists across southern Italy, La Segreta is a famously food-friendly red blend that offers light berry, cherry, almond and spice aromas. The easy mouthfeel pairs with pasta, risotto, veal or roast chicken.

April 2012

La Segreta is a well-executed, unoaked and affordable blend of Nero d'Avola, Merlot, Syrah and Cab Franc that offers distinctive aromas of cherry, pomegranate juice, almond paste and light nuances of exotic spice and vanilla. It has polished tannins and an easy disposition overall.

Ripe and full of flavor, with berry and cherry jam character that is balanced with appealing spice and acidity notes. With a bright, focused finish.

Aromas of pink peppercorn lead to a juicy palate of cherry and plum notes, as a stony minerality accents the vibrant finish.

Open-knit and balanced, with a lightly smoky base note underscoring the easy-drinking palate of red currant, dried herb and licorice drop. Nero d'Avola, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc.
