Rogov's Guide to Israeli Wines
November 2012

... It does have good focus, a bright and powerful finish, intensity and good flavors, though. It is also a bit herbaceous, which nuance becomes more prominent with air, although less so than its sibling, the Merlot Reserve.

The 2009 CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVE was aged for 12 months in 60% new French oak. Like its sibling reviewed this issue, the Merlot Reserve, this is a pretty consistent wine from Recanati that always offers some value, if rarely providing much upside. In 2009, Recanati seems to have produced some of its best reserves, though, with better structure and a little more intensity. For mid-term drinking, this is beautifully balanced and well focused, with reasonable mid-palate depth for its level and surprising grip on the finish. It evolves beautifully with some air, becoming more sensual in texture with well integrated tannins. It is much better after an hour than it was on opening.

With 16 months in French oak, this is a big wine with big flavors. Fleshy black plums guts, black cherry, crushed African violet petals and a touch of tobacco appear in the bouquet, while cherry pit, pepper and cigar spice fill otu the palate. Medium weight and lush in the mouth with solid tannins and acidity, this is a good choice now with strong meat dishes or a candidate to hold onto for a couple more years.

There's a nice herbal streak to the cassis and bramble berry core of this wine. A full, robust structure and firm tannins frame the weighty dark-fruit flavors, while accents of tobacco and leather unfold on the long, evolving finish.

Fragrances of wild berries, bramble and honeysuckle pave the way for flavors of cherry cola, toffee and tangerine zest. This is soft and round in the mouth, with tannins that are almost imperceptible at first yet last through the finish, hand-in-hand with remarkably bright acidity.

Inky red-violet to the eye, this wine has an intense nose of blackberry, toast and chocolate. Tannins are strong yet well matched by rich flavors of strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, smoke, orange zest and violet. It is full figured on the palate, with a smooth yet zesty finish. Kosher.

Dense and supple, this wears its Mediterranean origins in plummy richness and sappy herbal notes, all while keeping to a firm, savory profile. This tight tannins give it meaty texture, while notes of earth and spice meld into smokiness oak.

August 2017

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve David Vineyard was aged for 18 months in French barriques (40% new) and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This is along the same lines as the Merlot, but with more power (not unusual) and a surprisingly crisp edge. A touch herbal, this is modest in the mid-palate, the tannins overshadowing the fruit just now.
