Gorgeous! Wonderful deep nose, great fruit in the mouth, still young and vigorous.

Quarterly Review of Wines
November 2009

Beautiful aroma, intense black cherry fruit with a little espresso undertone; live and vigorous. A great wine by any measure.

Mushrooms - even a little truffle - and leather in the aroma, gorgeous second-childhood dark-cherry fruit on the palate. Lovely, live, and deep: an amazing wine.

Tasted August, 2009: extraordinary! Silken on the palate, with amazing depth and complexity - all dry, port-like fruit, bitter chocolate, dried berry, licorice and anise - an unbelievable harmony of diverse flavors, with not the slightest sign of tiredness.

Composed, elegant, and evolving beautifully...mark[s] the transition from the dominance of youthful fruit to the emergence of Amarone's wonderfully comples and dark mature flavors.

Intensely fruity, and with all the underlying structure to go for years.

Coffee and bitter chocolate nose. In the mouth, lithe, lean, elegant and dark-toned. Very lovely.

Quarterly Review of Wines
November 2009

Very young and grapey; abundant fruit, good acid, plenty of tannin for structure. This is a classic youthful Amarone from one of the most traditional houses.

Quarterly Review of Wines
November 2009

Slightly more evolved; a less lush, more austere vintage than 2000.

Wine can make a great present, no matter if the recipient is a buff or a novice. Here are some choices for every palate. For drinkers who deserve more because they always give you thoughtful gifts: 1968 and 1973 Bertani Amarone: This excellent winery offers both bottles in an attractive wooden gift box. Amarone ages wonderfully, so these wines will delight anyone with a wine cellar.

The Oenophile's Giving Guide
November 2005

Classical Amarone in its gargantuan scale and unrelenting power...The richness covers vast territories from black cherry to orange pekoe tea, cola and a long tannic trail of smoke. Designed to age, this should mellow with another ten years in the bottle.

The 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a big, enveloping wine loaded with wild cherries, licorice, new leather and dried flowers, not to mention considerable personality...the 2003 should continue to drink well for at least a handful of years. Ideally the wine is best paired with hearty dishes.

February 2011

The 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is flat-out gorgeous...The 2004 is a superb, elegant Amarone graced with expressive dark red fruit, flowers, tobacco and spices, all supported by finessed, silky tannins. Sweet roses, tar and licorice are woven into the layered, sublime finish. Deceptively medium in body, the 2004 has the stuffing to age well for decades.

Fragrant and intense, Bertani's 2003 Amarone delivers enticing aromas of spice, cola, mature berry fruit and smoke. You'll feel the power in the mouth -- although the wine's alcohol is beautifully intergrated -- and a long, satisfying finish.

Underbrush, crushed blue flower, fig, charred earth and ripe black cherry aromas come together on this full-bodied red. The brooding, muscular palate delivers blackberry jam, raisin, licorice and tobacco while tightly knit, ripe tannins provide support. Drink after 2017.

Smooth, toasty and solid...the bouquet is toasty and fruity, with a bit of cedar. The mouth offers cherry, berry and chocolate, the standard three of Amarone. Finishes steady, with some size.

An aroma of fresh berries emerges. The palate delivers a blast of cranberries, cocoa and vanilla. The texture is chewy and rustic.

Bertani's wines are rich with heritage and show obvious pride in local tradition. These wines taste like no others - you know you are drinking Amarone and wines from the Veneto region when you taste Bertani's wines. Smoky cedar laces black plum and dried cherry fruit, with an earthy note that emerges on the moderate, spicy finish.

Wine Skinny
July 2006

This traditional style delivers base notes of smoke and sweet earth, joined by focused flavors of dried cherry, walnut, date, star anise and a hint of rich treacle. Displays lovely balance, supple tannins and a fresh, herb- and mineral-tinged finish.

A trim version, with grippy tannins and tightly knit flavors of grilled plum, dried rose petal, garrigue and cocoa powder. Shows length and verve on the finish, but will need some time to open up.

Wine Spectator
December 2013

An elegant version, finely knitting supple tannins and a rich vein of tarry minerality with flavors of dried cherry and fig fruit, dried marjoram, hot stone and bergamot. Offers a lingering, spiced finish. Drink now through 2027.

A focused Amarone, with dried cherry and spicy tobacco character. Medium-bodied, with good acidity and a clean, tight finish. Pleasant, even refreshing now, but will age as well.

Wine Spectator
January 2009

Aromas of leather, menthol, dried fruit, exotic spice and a balsamic note emerge on this full-bodied wine. On the firmly structured palate, a tannic backbone supports dried black cherry, raisin, licorice and tobacco.

Good full ruby. Reticent aromas and flavors of violet, dried herbs and ripe red cherry. Slightly disjointed acidity and spicy, noteworthy tannins gives this an edgy quality on the tactile, medium-long finish which features plenty of botanical herb and spice nuances. I like this wine’s traditional aromas and flavors, but I found it to be a little fruit-challenged at present; perhaps it’s going through a closed phase at present.

Vinous
May 2017

A subtle red, with a hint of smoky mineral underscoring the dried cherry, cocoa powder and dried thyme notes. Fresh and elegant, framed by fine tannins and offering a lingering, silky finish. Drink now through 2025.
