Interesting aromas of tar, asphalt and dried fruit follow through to a full body, with blackberry, black cherry and sliced meat. Drink now.

James Suckling

A dark, brooding wine that shows the wilder, animalistic side of Nero d'Avola in its dark fruit, earthiness, sage, and mint.

Zisola's 2013 Zisola is a very attractive red wine that shows a most promising side to modern Sicilian winemaking. This Nero d'Avola opens to a medium garnet and ruby color and shows a compact but bright and zesty style. Elegant tones of red cherry, dried herb and light spice are integrated and balanced. The effect is compact and tight.

The 2012 Sicilia Zisola benefits from marine breezes that lift off the Sicilian shores and rocky limestone soils that lock in important moisture during the hot summer months. These conditions add a bright acidity vein that keeps this red wine from feeling too heavy. The effect is light and buoyant, and the wine offers a long succession of simple cherry and primary fruit aromas.

This features aromas of tilled soil, dark-skinned fruit and a whiff of espresso. The reserved palate offers dried black cherry and a hint of licorice alongside rather astringent tannins.

Earthy aromas of leather, truffle, game and ripe black-skinned fruit lead the way on the nose of this smooth, savory red. The structured palate offers juicy black cherry, blackberry, cinnamon and ground white pepper alongside soft, silky tannins. A smoky note bolsters the finish. Drink through 2019.

A lovely, medium bodied red, with a pure beam of ripe cherry and fresh acidity layered with supple tannins and accents of star anise, dried thyme, loamy earth and mocha

The 2014 Sicilia Noto Zisola offers a smooth and silky interpretation of Nero d'Avola with no sharp edges. This red wine is all about integration. The way those flavors of cherry, spice and tobacco flow together highlights this point. Sweet fruit adds a pretty sense of lightness and freshness to the finish. Zisola drinks well in the near and medium term.

Bright red. Perfumed aromas of quinine, sweet spices and herbs complicate red cherry notes. Fresh and juicy with youthful, chewy tannins and a peppery bite on the long finish. Ages 10 months in small oak barrels. A nice wine.
