A wine with lots of cherry and blueberry character. Lots of new wood too. Full to medium body, bright acidity and a clean finish. Drink now.

Made from a blend of 80% Nero d'Avola and 20% Syrah, the 2011 Noto Rosso Doppiozeta could best be described as a "super Sicilian" wine. The wine shows thick contours with lush layers of dark fruit, dried cherry, spice and moist chewing tobacco packed tight within. The tannins are soft and polished, but the wine has enough consistency and richness to leave a lasting impression. Delicate tones of smoke and crushed mineral appear as delicate end-notes.

The 2012 Noto Rosso Doppiozeta is mostly Nero d'Avola with a smaller part Syrah. Some 150,000 bottles are produced and the fruit is sourced from across the estate's 21 hectares of vine. The wine is muscular and hearty with thick layers of luscious fruit that are enhanced by balanced spice, leather and tobacco. As in past years, Doppiozeta proves to be my favorite wine from the Zisola estate. The combination of those two grapes hits the spot.

Opens with a rich, saturated appearance, impressive complexity and intense aromas of ripe fruit and spice. The blend sees Nero d'Avola, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, and you can recognize the amazing fruit characteristics of each variety. The oak is still very present on the nose, but the tannins are soft.

Under the guidance of Tuscany's Mazzei brothers, Doppiozeta is a New World wine from an Old World tradition. The blend is 60% Nero d'Avola with the balance comprised of Syrah and Cabernet Franc. It offers modern accents of chocolate fudge and spice behind territory-driven layers of small berry fruit, wild sage and toasted pistachio.

Made with Nero d'Avola and other grapes, all bush-trained, this opens with subdued aromas of dark berry and toast. The dense palate offers dried blackberry, oak-driven spice and a chocolate note alongside firm tannins. Drink sooner rather than later to capture the fruit flavors.

Made with 80% Nero d'Avola and 20% Syrah, this opens with aromas of mature black-skinned fruit, toast, leather and Oriental spice. The firm palate offers ripe black cherry, raspberry jam, vanilla and oak-driven spice alongside fine-grained tannins.

Tarry smoke and tobacco notes underscore the boysenberry coulis, mocha and ground anise flavors in this dark, rich red. Well-balanced and juicy throughout, with fine-grained tannins that build on the lasting finish. Nero d'Avola, Syrah and Cabernet Franc.

Stylish, with suave, finely knit tannins and a mouthwatering thread of juicy acidity that laces the flavors of pure black cherry puree, mocha, melted licorice, herbed olive and star anise. Harmonious and accessible now, but should develop with short-term cellaring.

Supple and well-knit, this medium-bodied red features a note of loamy earth underscoring the flavors of ripe black cherry and licorice drop, with hints of bresaola and mocha. Additional sweet fruit nuances linger on the fresh finish.

Nero d'Avola is blended with Syrah to make the 2013 Noto Rosso Doppiozeta. The vines are alberello or bush-trained, planted in red soils. Candied cherry and rum cake appear on the bouquet. Beyond those dark fruit layers is a savory presence of exotic spice, leather and moist chewing tobacco. This is a plump, ripe and modern red from Sicily that offers generous abundance and juiciness.

Dark red-ruby. Clean aromas and flavors of dark fruit, spices and herbs. A hint of chocolate emerges on the medium-long, slightly tart finish. A well made wine but tastes like it could have been made with any grape variety anywhere in the world that has a hot climate. Made with 100% Nero d'Avola grapes.
