A strappy, full-bodied take on Carignan, with flavors of wild raspberry, red currant, smoked meat and dried flowers hemmed in by slightly grippy tannins, while singed mesquite and apple wood notes hover in the background. A very solid, distinctive red, with good tension despite its weight. Drink now through 2030. 1,500 cases made, 60 cases imported. –KB

Wonderfully fragrant nose with stacks of black cherry fruit, this remarkable carignan has almost supernatural energy and vibrant acidity on the full-bodied palate. Long, racy and chalky finish with way more complexity than this grape usually gives. From dry-farmed vines planted in 1981. Drink now. Drink now. – J.S.

It has flavors of blackberry, ripe cherry, bittersweet chocolate, espresso bean and olive tapenade wrapped up in supple tannins. There is a pleasant but unexpected note of jalapeño on the finish. The 2019 Wild Carignan Reserve was aged for 12 months in 35% new French oak and comes in at 13.6% alcohol. Like many of the offerings in this report, this is not in the marketplace yet, but this is one of the furthest out, set for release in December of this year. For the moment, it is indeed undeveloped, but that doesn't mean the tannins are hard. Rather, it is the fruit that is a bit muted. Right at the moment, this might be a vintage where I prefer the Marselan to the Carignan, usually not the case. This, however, still has some potential, perhaps improvement to come. Or, at least, so I suspect. They both need to show their stuff with a little more time in bottle. Overall, this combines elegance, flavor and focus. It will surely be better this time next year, but right now the Marselan might be the safer bet. -M.S.

The 2016 Wild Carignan Reserve was aged for ten months in 50% new French oak and comes in at 14% alcohol. In a theoretical sense—not every year—this is my personal favorite of Recanati's lineup, for the combination of style and quality. This seems like a pretty fine year for it. As surprisingly lush as the Marselan was this issue, this adds a layer of depth and goes one step further. The texture runs from silk to velvet and makes this very sensual at the outset. There is plenty of flavor, some raspberries supported by acidity, all finishing very dry. The fine structure supports the fruit beautifully. You can drink this right now, but give it a year or so in the cellar to pull in the wood better if you can.

The 2015 Wild Carignan Reserve was aged for eight months in 50% new French barriques and comes in at 14% alcohol. This has quickly become one of my favorites in Recanati's lineup for its freshness, sunny demeanor and character. Showing mid-palate finesse, it nonetheless has more weight than the Marselan this issue, fine focus and an earthy conclusion. Very Burgundian, this is all about that finesse, but there is plenty of flavor, too, some dark plums and baked cherries to go with the earth. There is a backbone, too, and the texture is rather sexy, pure velvet at the moment. Like pretty much all of Recanati's releases, this has a refined and sophisticated feel to it. This is set for release in January 2018. It should be very approachable by then.

Dark red-violet in color, this wine has aromas of black plum, fig, chocolate and mint. Flavors of blackberry, cherry, black fig, eucalyptus and anise coalesce on the palate. Tannins are strong, but fruit and brightness hold their own. Touches of cranberry join the show just prior to the lingering finish. Kosher.

The 2014 Wild Carignan Reserve was aged for eight months in French barriques (60% new, the rest used). It comes in at just 13.3% alcohol. Elegant in the mid-palate, tight on the finish and rather crisp, this has underlying hints of earth and a touch of smoke. The initial caressing texture is cut quickly by acidity and tannins. This really could use a couple of years to settle down. It is all about the potential just now, but it looks like a beauty. It does need to have that smoke blow off. It's worth leaning up just now. For one thing, every time I'm conservative and lean down, this bottling fools me. They never seem to show really well on release. Give it a year or two in the cellar.

A bouquet of cherry, blueberry and vanilla prepares the tastebuds for flavors of blueberry, strawberry, fennel bulb and white chocolate. There is a nice play on the palate between bright acidity and chewy tannins, and the delightful finish is like a mouthful of blueberry pie with a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds. Kosher.
