Cornas "Les Ruchets"

2015 France Rhone Valley
94 Points

While the 2015 Cornas Les Ruchets sees more new oak than the Terres Brûlées release (15% new oak), it shows less of it and has a sensational bouquet of blackberries, crushed rocks, violets and exotic flowers. This full-bodied, concentrated Cornas has present, yet ripe tannin, a stacked mid-palate and a great finish. It will drink well for 10-15 years.

From the Chaillot lieu-dit and the most concentrated and rich in the lineup, the 2014 Cornas Les Ruchets was the tightest, most backward and reserved on this occasion. It slowly gave up notes of ripe dark fruits, lavender, hints of minerality and damp earth, as well as medium to full-bodied richness, a terrific mid-palate and ripe, sweet tannin. It needs to be forgotten for a year of three, and like the cuvée La Louvée, will drink well for a decade.

Fleshy and layered, with crushed blueberry, açai berry and plum flavors that have melded together, carried by a dense but rounded structure. The long finish lets sweet tobacco and dark fruit cake notes check in. A loamy tug at the end keeps this honest. Best from 2018 through 2029.

Like the La Louvee, this wine is plummy and superripe, wrapped in toasty, cedary oak. It's savory as well, with meaty notes carried along by waves of richness. The finish is lined with mouthcoating tannins, suggesting a few years of cellaring are warranted. Drink 2018-2030.

Cornas "Les Ruchets"

2013 France Rhone Valley
90 Points

The 2013 Cornas les Ruchets comes all from the Chaillot lieu-dit (I believe Les Ruchets refers to a specific parcel within the vineyard), and was raised in a combination of new and older barrels. Giving up lots of mostly red fruits intermixed with complex notes of peppery herbs, potpourri and spring flowers, it's medium plus-bodied, nicely concentrated and structured on the palate with a tight, slightly backwards feel. It needs to be forgotten for 3-4 years, at which point it should drink nicely for a decade.

Bramble-edged and lively, showing enticing cassis, anise and blackberry coulis flavors liberally laced with dark olive and singed bay leaf notes. The smoldering charcoal edge is buried on the finish. Needs some time to sort itself out, but this remains rock-solid.

Glass-staining purple. Deeply perfumed aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet pastille and smoky minerals, with hints of pipe tobacco and black cardamom in the background. Seamless and appealingly sweet, offering energetic dark berry, vanilla and cola flavors, with a touch of star anise on the back half. Gains richness and spiciness with air and finishes on a smoky note, with youthfully firm tannins adding shape.

Inky ruby.÷ Potent blackberry and blueberry aromas are complemented by deeper notes of pipe tobacco, olive and black cardamom.÷ Bitter cherry, espresso and dark chocolate flavors show very good depth and structure, picking up energizing spiciness with air.÷ Youthfully tight on the chewy, tannic finish but there's a lot of concentrated dark fruit here.

Inky purple. Intense, smoke-tinged blackberry and cassis on the nose, with deeper notes of licorice and espresso adding complexity. Sweet, broad and densely packed, with velvety flavors of blackcurrant and blackberry and peppery spices in the background. Closes with excellent clarity, smooth tannins and a suave, very persistent floral pastille quality.

Shows a lovely savory hint, with green olive and tobacco notes wrapping around serious chalky grip. The core of butter, cherry, red currant and blackberry fruit sits in the background for now. Dense and vinous, this is driven by minerality, and should age wonderfully as the fruit comes forward. Best from 2015 through 2027.

Inky ruby. Blackberry preserves and cherry-cola on the deeply scented nose and in the mouth. Weighty but lively, showing impressive concentration and a slow-building floral pastille quality. Becomes spicier with air and shows excellent clarity and focus. Dusty tannins give grip to the finish, which strongly echoes the blackberry note.

Bright purple. Cherry-vanilla, cola and dark berry compote on the nose. Supple and alluringly sweet, with deep black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and slow-mounting spiciness. The cola and vanilla notes resonate on the long, smooth, energetic finish. I find this wine surprisingly approachable but it clearly has the depth to age.

It is a big wine, yet remarkably polished, and, dare I say, elegant (not a word often used to describe Cornas). There?s a spicy--almost peppery--element to its minerality.÷ You can feel the granite.÷Although his wines develop beautifully, this one is remarkably approachable now, especially with hearty fare.

Very ripe, with lush plum sauce, blackberry confiture and linzer torte flavors all rolled together, with additional sweet tobacco, macerated olive and white pepper notes cutting through the finish. A long sanguine edge lingers. Shows great range and intensity. Best from 2013 through 2021.

Dark purple. Exotic, heady aromas of mulberry, blackcurrant, apricot, licorice and violet, with a suggestion of smokiness. Sweet and juicy but tight, with pliant dark berry compote and cherry qualities, peppery spices and a late note of black olive. The finish features fine-grained tannins and very good clarity. All the fruit for this wine comes from Chaillot.

Ruby-red. Deep dark berry and cherry compote on the nose, with notes of espresso and violet adding complexity. Fresher on the palate, with a sexy floral pastille quality lifting the attractive black raspberry and mulberry fruit flavors. This has gained energy since last year and is surprisingly approachable now. Still, I'd wait a few more years before pulling the cork.

Really packed, this modern-style Cornas drips with fig, plum sauce, melted licorice and pastis flavors, while the iron and loam notes rumble underneath. The long finish seems plush, but is loaded with latent grip. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2010 through 2022.

Ruby-red. A bit introverted today, displaying powerful dark fruit and chocolate qualities on the nose. Plump and ripe, with deep kirsch and plum flavors and a refreshing jolt of cracked pepper. The fully resolved tannins add subtle back-end grip without distracting from the fruit. Gains freshness with air and finishes with excellent clarity and persistence. Awfully young but this wine's depth and power are impressive. Fans of richer syrah may score this even higher than I do today.
