A tightly woven red, revealing concentrated black cherry, cedar, earth, tobacco and tar flavors. Firm tannins suggest this will always be in the rustic camp. Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2019 through 2025.
The 2013 Philip is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mazzei family's holdings in both Chianti Classico and Maremma. Dark, sensual and inviting, the 2013 possesses terrific balance and integrity throughout. Black cherry, menthol, licorice, herbs and dark spices blossom into the creamy, expansive finish. It would be nice to see a little more varietal character. Still, this is very well done.
The 2011 Philip is a wine with an American spirit. The front label depicts family ancestor Philip Mazzei (1730-1816) but his white wig and demeanor is very reminiscent of the United States founding fathers. The wine is based on Cabernet Sauvignon (with some Cabernet Franc). It offers surprisingly soft and luscious tannins with a bouquet that is enhanced with dark berry and sweet spice. It makes a great choice for near-term enjoyment.
Made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine opens with aromas of red berries, sweet baking spice, grilled herbs and a whiff of cedar. The structured but almost weightless palate doles out ripe red currants, red raspberries, licorice, mocha and white pepper. Supple, smooth tannins weave alongside the juicy flavors.
A pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Philip does a great job of capturing the power and intensity of the vintage. This lovely expression is infused with dark cherry and oak spice that wrap softly over the palate. The quality of tannin is also nicely evolved at this point with silky finishes and a firm sense of presence and weight in the mouth.
Toasty oak frames cherry and wild herb flavors in this juicy red. Dense and tightly structured, echoing oak spice details on the long finish. Shows fine balance overall.
Beautiful aromas of blackberries and wet earth follow through to a full body with velvety tannins and a long finish. Velvety and slightly austere tannins. A Bordeaux blend in homage to Philip Mazzei, who helped the late US president Thomas Jefferson to establish his vineyard in the state of Virginia. It's made from various vineyards of the Mazzei family in Tuscany.
100% Cabernet Sauvignon from both the Fonterutoli estate in Castellina in Chianti and the Belguardo estate in Maremma. Philip is a bold and brawny wine with New World tasting points: Exotic spice and ripe fruit are principal players.
A thick red, featuring ample, well-integrated tannins that set the stage for the black cherry and black currant flavors. Well-balanced, with a spicy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon.
