Tenuta Belguardo Maremma Toscana IGT

2013 Italy Tuscany
95 Points

A red of great purity and polish, offering black cherry, blackberry, spice and herb flavors, this evokes tobacco, graphite and leather nuances as it builds nicely on the palate. Finishes with grip, harmony and complexity, as well as terrific length. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG

2008 Italy Veneto
90 Points

Good full ruby. Reticent aromas and flavors of violet, dried herbs and ripe red cherry. Slightly disjointed acidity and spicy, noteworthy tannins gives this an edgy quality on the tactile, medium-long finish which features plenty of botanical herb and spice nuances. I like this wine’s traditional aromas and flavors, but I found it to be a little fruit-challenged at present; perhaps it’s going through a closed phase at present.

Triennia

2012 Spain Ribera del Duero
92 Points

Earth, leather and strong but quality oak notes accent berry-fruit aromas. Cheek-sucking tannins make for a rugged mouthfeel. Spicy, peppery berry flavors are fully oaked and toasty, while this tastes dry and minty on the finish. Grilled meat and/or a few years on its side is what this needs. Drink through 2025.

"Amour de Dieu" Condrieu

2013 France Rhone Valley
90 Points

This wine seems broad across the palate, but not quite as deep as some Condrieus. The fruit is understated, resembling gently toasted marshmallow and maybe a touch of baked pineapple, rather than flamboyant apricot and spice. Plan on serving it with fish or chicken rather than something rich or extravagant.

Blanc de Blancs

NV/MV France Champagne
90 Points

Delicate, mineral-tinged aromas of Meyer lemon, green apple and white flowers, with a hint of toasty lees in the background. Crisp and sharply focused, offering bitter lemon zest and orchard fruit flavors that become fleshier with air. Shows very good energy and cut on the finish, which leaves a hint of chalkiness behind.

Brut Réserve

The satiny bead carries vibrant flavors of apricot, biscotti, slivered almond, honey and lemon zest in this expressive version, while firm acidity drives through to the chalky finish.

Joyau de France

2000 France Champagne

Bright gold. Pungent, deeply scented bouquet evokes peach nectar, poached pear, anise, brown butter and smoky minerals. Broad and densely packed, with a velvety texture and powerful orchard and pit fruit flavors that pick up a toasty element with aeration. Distinctly rich yet surprisingly lively as well, finishing with strong mineral cut and excellent floral persistence.

Grand Vintage

2007 France Champagne
94 Points

Disgorged in October 2014, this smooth, now mature, wine has flavors of yeasty toastiness and a tight, mineral structure. Sliced apple and lemon zest still give freshness. Behind the fruit, crisp texture and a steely edge await. It is beautifully balanced, rich while dry and ready to drink.

Rosé

NV/MV France Champagne
91 Points

Light orange-pink. High-pitched, mineral-laced red berry and orange zest aromas are complicated by notes of cinnamon and allspice. Dry and exotically flavored, offering blood orange and gingerbread flavors and a suggestion of candied rose. Tight, focused and very spicy on the penetrating finish, which clings with strong mineral-driven tenacity.

Joyau de France

2000 France Champagne
91 Points

The millennium year, 2000, was not the greatest Champagne vintage. However, Boizel has released a prestige cuvée from that year and produced a well matured wine with a dry character and plenty of toasty notes. Dominated by Pinot Noir, it is deliciously rich and totally ready to drink.

Ultime

NV/MV France Champagne
90 Points

Taking advantage of recent warm vintages, Boizel has joined other producers in taking its range drier. This extra brut is full of crisp apple and lemon flavors. It is dry, although the acidity is balanced by the ripe fruitiness and mineral aftertaste.

Spezieri

2015 Italy Tuscany
88 Points

This blend—mostly sangiovese and ciliegiolo— undergoes a brief maceration to produce a lively wine that’s ready to drink. The pliant tannins give shape to the wild blueberry and black cherry flavors without impeding them, while notes of sage and bitter chocolate add interest. It’s a match for juicy char-grilled burgers.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

2011 Italy Tuscany
92 Points

Notes of smoke and black licorice lend a brooding character to this wine’s red plum and black cherry flavors. Its tannins feel firm yet polished, giving a cool structure to the rich fruit core that take on accents of tarragon and black spice. Match its herbal richness to braised lamb.

Poggio al Vento Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

2008 Italy Tuscany
94 Points

A hailstorm in August reduced yields for the 2008 vintage at Col d’Orcia, but dry conditions followed, which concentrated flavors in the remaining fruit. That concentration is evident in this riserva from Poggio al Vento, a vineyard planted in 1974 on a south-facing slope at nearly 1,150 feet above sea level. Pleasantly abrasive tannins shroud a tight nugget of dark cherry and bitter almond flavor at the wine’s center. Those flavors gain volume gradually, adding soft notes of tarragon and gentian along with earthy mushroom tones. The wine is dense and tight, yet manages to maintain a translucent, lifted feeling. It aged for four years in large Slavonian casks and another two in bottle, and will continue to improve over the next decade.
