Siepi Toscana IGT

2013 Italy Tuscany
93 Points

Mazzei's 2013 Siepi is terrific. Precise and beautifully focused throughout, the 2013 offers up a compelling mélange of dark cherry/blueberry jam, sweet spices, menthol, licorice and new leather. Unctuous to the core, the 2013 retains striking nuance and poise throughout. The 2013 is an exciting Siepi, but it needs time to unwind.

Black cherry, tobacco, spice, leather, licorice and smoke overtones are laced throughout the 2014 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli. Pliant and supple, the 2014 is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. The bright, high-acid style of the year is very much present, but that should also help the wine develop nicely in bottle.

This is a wonderful follow-up to the superb 2012. Aromas are so intriguing with raspberry, blackberry and light toasted fruits. Some black tea. Full body, and very compacted. Toned and muscular tannins. Racy finish with bright acidity. Fascinating to taste (drink) now but this will be even better in 2019 and onwards.

Castello di Fonterutoli

The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a standout wine and I prefer it to the 2012 vintage and the 2010 vintage (that I reviewed twice over the course of a year with divergent scores). Of these wines, this vintage offers the broadest sense of intensity and generosity. The wine is also distinguished by dark fruit and spice that stand tall with clear identities. The best fruit from the estate's various vineyard sites are selected for this wine. This careful selection process makes it possible to dedicate the best fruit to a wine like this despite varying vintage conditions.

The 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a bit tighter compared to the very generous and forthcoming 2011 vintage. The wine is also slightly thinner in the mouth with pointed aromas of bright cherry, dried blackberry, spice, toasted almond and pressed rose petal. This Gran Selezione reveals bright lines and crisp acidity with a attractive sharpness and focus. This wine will no doubt flesh out further as it spends more time aging in the bottle.

The 2013 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is a composite of 90% Sangiovese consisting of the 36 biotypes that the Mazzei family has identified in their vineyards. The rest of the wine is made with Merlot and Malvasia Nera, that is also decided by different clone selections. This Chianti Classico is very beautiful and streamlined with a deep sense of elegance and finesse. The quality of fruit is tonic and bright in this balanced vintage.

Siepi Toscana IGT 2012 20 Anniversary Edition

2012 Italy Tuscany
93 Points

A 50-50 blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, the 2012 Siepi is a beautiful wine that bursts open with enormous fruit intensity and purity. Siepi is a unique wine that is characterized by a deep sense of sharpness and focus that brings a very bright quality to the bouquet. This vintage represents the 20th anniversary of this wine (the first vintage produced was 1992) although this special single-vineyard has been in family hands since 1435 (you read that correctly). Older Merlot vines were replanted three years ago.

Siepi Toscana IGT 2012 20 Anniversary Edition

2013 Italy Tuscany
95 Points

The 2013 Siepi is a knockout wine that hits all the sense with just the right level of complexity. The wine is soft, brooding, velvety and long in persistency. It is made with equal parts Merlot and Sangiovese and both grapes bring their best assets to the blend. Sangiovese shows an upfront personality with territory-driven tones of small berry and spice. This grape also offers beautifully fresh acidity. The Merlot component plays a strong background role and adds softness, lushness and richness. This is a new wine that needs a few more years of bottle aging. Otherwise it can be aged or consumed in the near-term.

Aromas of roasted coffee bean, toast, oak-driven spice, ripe berry and scorched earth lead the nose. The firm palate offers black cherry extract, espresso, licorice, oak and coconut alongside assertive, grippy tannins. Still oak driven and tightly tannic, give this a few years to fully develop but then drink to capture the remaining fruit richness. Drink 2017-2021.

Fantastic depth of fruit and mouthfeel to this red with blackberries, blueberries, spices, walnuts and fresh herb character. Orange peel, too. Full body, round and savory tannins and a mouth watering finish. A blend of sangivoese and merlot. Easily the best Siepi ever, and it celebrates 20 years of production. Drink or hold.

Dense and dark, this modern take on Chianti Classico sees 20 months in barriques, which contribute to loads of oak spice aromas with a hint of dill. Those notes surround a core of dark berry and cherry flavors, while supple tannins polish the finish, leaving a clean and warm impression.

Castello di Fonterutoli?s 2013 Chianti Classico is a riper and fleshier rendition, without going over the top. It?s a very clean and pure expression of Chianti Classico with an attractive succulence in the finish. Freshness in the finish holds it all together. It?s a delight to drink now with robust fare.

Brimming with gorgeous intensity and richness, the 2011 Siepi is a hugely hedonistic and fruit-forward expression. The blend is Sangiovese and Merlot, and although you can taste some of the overt ripeness and power of the French grape, the Sangiovese side kicks in with pretty freshness and elegance. Dark cherry, tobacco and chocolate are delivered in thick waves over the palate. This Siepi is ready to drink now, or you can cellar it.

Violet, cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors are pure, meshing seamlessly with the silky texture. Harmonious and approachable now, with fine length, but the light dusting of tannins on the finish suggests this will develop nicely as well. Drink now through 2020.

The 2010 Chianti Classico shows lovely depth and power in its expressive dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol and licorice. Clean veins of minerality give the wine its considerable focus and energy. This is an especially understated wine from Fonterutoli, but it works. A clean, vibrant finish of stone fruits, flowers and spices resonates on the close.

Mazzei, operating from the beautiful Castello Fonterutoli estate at the heart of Chianti Classico, consistently delivers top-shelf wines and this expression upholds this proud tradition. The bouquet is rich and intense, with forest berry, chocolate, cigar box and spiced rum cake. Freshness, brightness and polished tannins appear on the close.

The 2008 Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli is impressive, especially considering the less than ideal growing conditions of the year. The 2008 is a decidedly cool, inward Castello built on minerality, verve and structure. Sweet black cherries, plums, tobacco and earthiness add complexity on the persistent finish. It will be interesting to see how this develops in bottle.

The 2008 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is impressive juice. A melange of mineral-infused scents add complexity to the dark cherry fruit. Medium in body, the Chianti Classico shows wonderful freshness, clarity and verve. While it doesn?t appear to have the density to support extended cellaring, this is one of the most finessed Chiantis I tasted from the uneven 2008 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016. With one exception, I was blown away by the wines I tasted from Fonterutoli, the Mazzei family?s historic Tuscan property. Proprietor Filippo Mazzei and his team led by consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini have done a terrific job with most of these wines.

Bright, deep red. Very pretty nose... aromas of red cherry, redcurrant, smoke and cedar are captivating. Very clean, smooth and fresh on entry, with real depth to the red cherry, plum, tobacco and underbrush flavors. Finishes with a creamy texture and lingering notes of smoky vanilla and plum.

Dark ruby. Tarry, balsamic, overripe dark fruit aromas on the nose, with a strong black pepper element. Then ripe and fleshy in the mouth, with prune, tar and underbrush flavors complicating blackcurrant and plum fruit flavors. This rich and full-bodied style is sure to win admirers.

Dark red with a paler rim. Musky aromas of earth, underbrush and tobacco, with livelier redcurrant and blueberry aromas emerging with air. The densely textured palate shows more red fruits than black, with complicating hints of cigar box and balsamic vinegar. The wine's seamless tannins contribute to a surprisingly forward impression considering its youth, but this is a very impressive mouthfeel that offers the advantage of early accessibility.
