Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo

2013 Italy Tuscany
89 Points

Bright red cherry, chalk, white flower and white pepper make a strong first impression in the 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo. Energetic and vibrant throughout, the 2013 could use another year or so in bottle, as it is a bit compact today. Still, there is good potential.

The 2014 Poggio Badiola is an attractive, fruity Sangiovese/Merlot blend to drink young, while the flavors remain vibrant. This is beautifully done at its level and for the year.

2013 Italy Tuscany

The 2013 Philip is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mazzei family's holdings in both Chianti Classico and Maremma. Dark, sensual and inviting, the 2013 possesses terrific balance and integrity throughout. Black cherry, menthol, licorice, herbs and dark spices blossom into the creamy, expansive finish. It would be nice to see a little more varietal character. Still, this is very well done.

Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo

2012 Italy Tuscany
89 Points

The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo shows slightly bigger astringency and a more rustic personality in this vintage. This is a single-vineyard expression located below the winery with clay soils and lots of small stones. The plot is planted to three different clones of Sangiovese and is located some 300 meters above sea level (altitude is important to Sangiovese). The wine is bright and tonic with fruit flavors that rise cheerfully from the bouquet. The mouthfeel is just a tad thinner in this edition.

2011 Italy Tuscany
90 Points

The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo shows balance and harmony with ripe aromas of cherry, forest berry, tobacco and grilled herb. An added bonus are the drying mineral notes of flint and ash that give this wine an extra level of elegance. Those mineral nuances also hold any jammy tones in check. This was a very warm vintage, but the bouquet hardly shows this. The tannins reveal fine texture and a silky nature.

Mix 36

2011 Italy Tuscany
93 Points

This wine represents a very interesting project spearheaded by the Mazzei family. The 2011 Mix 36 is a super blend of the 36 biotypes of Sangiovese that are farmed over the 600 hectares that make up this estate. In a sense, this wine serves as a measuring stick for a given vintage given that fact you can trace Sangiovese's growing cycle, clone by clone. To avoid confusion with Mazzei's Chianti Classico, the family decided to make this an IGT Toscana wine. Bold fruit tones of blackberry and dried raspberry are followed by blue flower, wet earth and spice.

Mix 36

2012 Italy Tuscany

Mazzei's 2012 Mix 36 is a very expressive rendition of Sangiovese that shows a level of complexity that would be difficult to achieve if this wine were made with a single clone. There are many, mixed berry tones that range from cherry to blueberry and the wine reveals pretty layers of spice, toasted almond and tobacco. Most of the vines in this experimental vineyard are now 15-years-old. This means they are entering the height of their best production years.

Philip

2011 Italy Tuscany
93 Points

The 2011 Philip is a wine with an American spirit. The front label depicts family ancestor Philip Mazzei (1730-1816) but his white wig and demeanor is very reminiscent of the United States founding fathers. The wine is based on Cabernet Sauvignon (with some Cabernet Franc). It offers surprisingly soft and luscious tannins with a bouquet that is enhanced with dark berry and sweet spice. It makes a great choice for near-term enjoyment.

A pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Philip does a great job of capturing the power and intensity of the vintage. Beautiful aromas of blackberries and wet earth follow through to a full body with velvety tannins and a long finish. Velvety and slightly austere tannins. A Bordeaux blend in homage to Philip Mazzei, who helped the late US president Thomas Jefferson to establish his vineyard in the state of Virginia. It's made from various vineyards of the Mazzei family in Tuscany.
