Santa Cecilia

2011 Italy Sicily
92 Points

Purple-ruby. Aromas of red fruit, bergamot, blackberry and blood orange. Almost sharp acidity really focuses the spicy red fruit flavors, providing noteworthy clarity and cut. Finishes long and pure; this strikes me as one of the more focused, denser and purest versions of Santa Cecilia ever. A lovely wine, it’s also completely different from the Plumbago, which is made with Nero d’Avola grown around Menfi; the Santa Cecilia is instead – since 2003 – 100 percent Nero d’Avola grown around Noto, an area known for more savory wines marked by red rather than black or blue fruit. Santa Cecilia has been a 100 percent Nero d’Avola wine only since the 1999 vintage (back then, still made with Nero d’Avola grapes grown in different parts of the island); before that, it was a Nero d’Avola-Syrah blend.

Dorilli Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico DOCG

2014 Italy Sicily
92 Points

Dark ruby. The deep, reticent but very pure nose features scents of black cherry and cherry cola, along with musky notes of smoky herbs. Brooding, still very youthful wine, offering dark and red fruit flavors of very good depth and sweetness. Showcases noteworthy spicy and floral qualities on a long, juicy finish featuring noble tannins and a touch of allspice. A blend of 70 percent Nero d’Avola and 30 percent Frappato.

Cerasuolo di Vittoria

2015 Italy Sicily
92 Points

Good full ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, cherry cola and flowers, along with a spicy nuance. Fresh and fruity on entry, then smooth but slightly tighter in the midpalate, offering bright strawberry and violet pastille flavors. Finishes very long with dusty tannins and lingering salinity. Even more delicate and fragrant than usual this year. A blend of 60 percent Nero d’Avola and 40 percent Frappato that sees no oak.

Bright red. Multidimensional, explosively perfumed nose combines raspberry, sour red cherry, rose petal, violet, minerals and cinnamon. Silky on entry, then brightly saline, offering vibrant, focused red berry, cherry and mineral flavors. Perfectly integrated acidity and seamless tannins give this sappy wine outstanding thrust on the extremely long, floral finish. This delightful wine is so good it literally goes down like water.

Cometa

2015 Italy Sicily
91 Points

Dark straw-yellow. Honeyed, mineral and green apple notes on the nose. Expressive and bright; lovely floral lift keeps the orchard and citrus fruit flavors light on their feet. Finishes long and bright, displaying a dusty phenolic quality but without coming off as dry; a lovely wine, but also a slightly less generous version of Cometa. From Fiano grapes planted on Menfi’s clay-rich soils next to the sea (the exact opposite of the calcareous volcanic soils of the mountains of Campania where Fiano was born), which are however historically well suited to white grape varieties. Since the 2006 vintage, Cometa no longer undergoes oak aging, gaining in precision and freshness but losing a little in opulence; still, it’s always an intriguing wine, combining the richness of Italy’s better southern white wines and the elegance of those from more mountainous northern sites.

Chardonnay

2014 Italy Sicily
92 Points

Bright straw-yellow. Aromas of peach, banana, lime, nut oil, clove and crushed stone. Then dense, dry and deep in the mouth, offering fresh apricot and lime flavors complicated by minerals and minty herbs. Finishes very long and with zingy reminders of stone fruits and lime. An excellent showing today, but built to age. There’s nothing exotic about this Chardonnay, which might surprise those who remember earlier vintages of it. This is Planeta’s most improved wine, and it’s now a truly world-class Chardonnay (the 2013 is also an outstanding wine). Made from grapes grown from the Maroccoli and Ulmo vineyards around Sambuca di Sicilia. The use of fruit from these higher vineyards (roughly 420 meters above sea level; older vintages were made with Chardonnay grapes from lower-lying, almost seaside vineyards), a decrease in the buttery oaky component, and earlier harvesting have all contributed to this wine’s improvement.

Merlot

2012 Italy Sicily
90 Points

Now a DOC wine, the 2012 Sicilia Merlot Sito dell'Ulmo opens to dark and inky layers of jammy fruit and exotic spice. The nice thing about this Sicilian Merlot is that it achieves good balance despite its more exuberant and opulent Sicilian personality. The bouquet offers tones of dark fruit and cherry preserves with spice, leather and tobacco at the rear. The tannins are soft and richly textured. The 2012 vintage was not an easy one in Sicily but this Merlot is intact.

Burdese

The 2011 Burdese represents a 70/30 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and the wine is dedicated to the many French influences that have shaped Sicilian viticulture over the centuries. This is a dark and impenetrable wine that is packed tight with brooding dark fruit and thick aromas of prune and plum. The wine flaunts a dense and richly extracted style. Evident aromas of tobacco, Spanish cedar, barbecue smoke and tar appear at the back.

Passito di Noto

2014 Italy Sicily
93 Points

The 2014 Sicilia Noto Passito di Noto is showing very nicely. Grapes are harvested at the end of August and are air-dryed in plastic crates that each hold five kilos of fruit for 40 days. During this time, they lose half their water weight and the sugar concentration is greatly increased. This creamy dessert wine made exclusively from Sicily's fragrant Moscato Bianco reveals bright notes of peach, tangerine skin, almond paste and honey. There's a lot of sweetness here for sure, but the wine never feels cloying or too heavy.

Burdese

Deep ruby. Very ripe aromas of dark berries, tomato confit and botanical herbs, with mocha and sweet herb nuances adding complexity. Lush, sweet and expansive, offering cassis and cherry-vanilla flavors nicely framed by smooth tannins. Very approachable already, but this wine's fruit-driven, almost syrupy-ripe personality may not appeal to those who prefer more classically styled Bordeaux blends.

Deep red. Sweet, spicy aromas of red cherry, licorice, coffee and marzipan, complicated by minerals and tobacco. Cometa

2014 Italy Sicily
91 Points

Bright dark yellow. Delicate, vibrant aromas of tropical fruits, pear and sweet spices. Then bright and fresh on the palate too, where the pineapple fruit is joined by gingery spices and minerals; boasts very good texture and richness but this wine strikes me as a less opulent and more restrained version of Cometa than some past vintages. A very serious, youthfully backward wine with a slightly bitter, saline finish, this will undoubtedly be better after spending a couple more years in the cellar.

Dark red. Reticent nose hints at dark berries, savory black cherry, tobacco and fresh herbs. Nicely spicy and concentrated, this blend boasts outstanding density and impressive youthful energy to its savory, brooding dark fruit and herb flavors. Finishes with a lovely acid/fruit balance and smooth tannins, but I find it less charming and immediately appealing than the entry-level Cerasuolo di Vittoria.

Bright red. Red berry, plum and mineral aromas and flavors are complicated by musky coffee and herb nuances plus a riper chocolate note. Bright straw-yellow color. Rich, ripe aromas and flavors of pineapple, pear and white flowers. At once tactile and precise, boasting terrific energy and cut thanks to lemon zest and mineral nuances, which add complexity and depth. Finishes saline, complex and long. This lovely Chardonnay strikes me as much less fat and blowsy, and frankly less of a caricature, than many made by Planeta in the past.
