Some initial musky scents blow off to reveal this nebbiolo's flavors of red cherry and pomegranate layered with earthy notes of truffle and dried leaves. The tannins feel firm and smooth, lending a cool mineral balance to the wine's spicy notes of clove and anise. Drink this autumnal wine next to a roaring fire with a bowl of rabbit stew.

Distinctive, mature aromas of licorice, cedar and sandalwood give way to leather, tar and tobacco flavors. Offers mouthfilling sweetness and a touch of prune, though this is savory rather than fruity, ending with assertive tannins. Decant. Drink now through 2020.

Gattinara D.O.C.G.

2010 Italy Piedmont
90 Points

The 2010 Gattinara is a firm, classically austere wine with persistent tannins and a slightly compact personality. It will be interesting to see if the 2010 puts on weight in bottle, or if the tannins soften, as today, the wine is very much shut down. Sweet dried cherries, tobacco, crushed herbs and dried flowers add shades of nuance through the middle and finish. I have seen Travaglini wines blossom with age before, although I don't really see that happening here.

Gattinara Riserva D.O.C.G.

2009 Italy Piedmont
94 Points

The 2009 Gattinara Riserva is a wine for the exceedingly patient. Huge swaths of tannin cut across a huge core of fruit in a Gattinara endowed with serious depth, resonance and intensity. Dark red cherry, orange rind, cloves, mint and saddle leather meld together in an exotic fabric of enticing aromas and flavors. Don't be fooled, though, the tannins are imposing and need time to soften. The 2009 Riserva is one of the best wines I can remember tasting from Travaglini in some time.

Gattinara (a pure expression of Nebbiolo) offers many of the aromatic characteristics one normally associates with Barbaresco and Barolo, two of Italy's greatest red wines. There are tones of small berry, cola, tar and licorice. The wine is tight and fresh overall and cleans the palate very well.

Gattinara D.O.C.G.

2005 Italy Piedmont

The 2005 Gattinara is a pretty, mid-weight Nebbiolo. Sweet cherries, tobacco, herbs and crushed flowers are some of the notes that emerge from this classy, refined red. The Gattinara is a somewhat fleeting, ethereal wine, but it has the freshness and firmness to age well for at least another decade. This entry-level Gattinara possesses tons of varietal character in a translucent, weightless expression that is typical of the appellation. This is a lovely set of new releases from Travaglini, one of the benchmark producers in Gattinara. The wines seem to have acquired an additional level of finesse in recent years.

The 2005 Gattinara Riserva possesses more depth, richness and sheer stuffing than the regular bottling. Incense, tar, wild cherries and herbs are some of the nuances that come to life in this powerful Gattinara. Bright medium-deep red with less brick than the entry-level Gattinara. Captivating aromas and flavors of almost liqueur-like red berries, violet, red rose and marzipan. Made in a sweet, supple style, with impressive concentration to the flavors. Finishes dense and juicy, with sophisticated but still youthful tannins.
