Calvados X.O.

NV/MV France Normandy
92 Points

A blend of brandies ranging from eight to 40 years old, this Calvados has a deep amber hue and aromas of vanilla, leather and red fruit. Sweetness and spice balance nicely. Cherry leather, dried apple and toasted almond play off dusty nutmeg, ginger, black pepper and cassia bark. Fleeting lemon-peel astringency refreshes the finish. -K.N.

Boldly aromatic, offering dried violet, plum and cassis notes. Rather refined on the palate, this shows tobacco and mineral accents to the ripe blackberry core, with notes of cocoa bean and espresso that fill out the broad finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2034. 30,000 cases made, 150 cases imported. -A.R.

Single Vineyard Malbec El Tomillo Estate

2017 Argentina Mendoza
91 Points

The 2017 Malbec Salentein Single Vineyard Viñedo El Tomillo hails from a vineyard Salentein owns in the south of the Uco Valley and was aged for 16 months in used barrels. Inky with a brick dust sheen, the nose is led by country herbs such as jarilla and thyme alongside ripe fruit. The concentrated palate has active tannins that channel the flow while ripe fruit flavors appear at the back of the mouth alongside a mild acidity that lurks behind the compact feel and ripe, herbal finish. -J.H.

Terre del Sommacco

2019 Italy Sicily
93 Points

The nose leads with delicate strawberry and cherry aromas, which gradually give way to more umami notes of balsamic, herbs, grilled meat and pepper. The palate deftly balances a more syrupy fruit element with an enduring earthy meatiness, while acid slithers through smooth, solid tannins like a snake looking for a sunning rock. Palm Bay International. —D.C.
