Since its launch in 2007, Rocca delle Macìe’s Sasyr Red Blend has charmed customers around the globe, becoming a mainstay in the winery’s portfolio. Though initially created for the North American market, Sasyr “has exceeded our expectations by establishing itself in the rest of the world,” says Rocca delle Macìe proprietor, Sergio Zingarelli. “It’s a wine appreciated not only by young consumers but also by more expert palates.”
To continue accelerating the brand’s forward market trajectory, Sergio recently unveiled a two-pronged stylistic refresh of Sasyr, beginning with the just-released 2023 vintage.
The redesigned label features a striking graphic typeface, which shifts attention to the recognizable and intriguing Sasyr brand name, derived from the wine’s signature blend of sangiovese and syrah. The modern font treatment creates a fresher look that conveys the wine’s bold, yet elegant, style and makes Sasyr stand out among the more traditional-looking labels in its competitive set.
Beyond its new look, the wine itself has also been refined. Sasyr’s classic blend remains unchanged (60% sangiovese, 40% syrah), but the team has updated its oak aging regimen. Previously, a small portion of the sangiovese (about 15%) aged in small oak barrels for around six months. Starting with the 2023 vintage, the team has chosen instead to age all the syrah in French oak barriques, one-third of which were new, for at least six months.
Treating the syrah to oak aging will increase the variety’s prominence in the Sasyr blend, enhancing its primary and slightly spicy aromas. Moreover, aging a greater portion of the wine in oak will maintain the wine’s bright brick color for longer, as well as enrich it with more tertiary notes, such as spices, tobacco, chocolate, and vanilla.
With this subtle refinement, Sasyr offers a delicious midpoint between the traditional, austere “Old World” style of many Tuscan wines and the lush, fruit-forward nature of “New World” wines. It has a modern yet classy character, with glossy red-fruit flavors and a satiny texture — all perfectly represented by the new label.
