Bauchant Orange Liqueur Why Bauchant Is Unique Among Orange Cognac Liqueurs
Founded in 1838, Maison Roullet-Fransac has a long and illustrious history of producing fine French Cognacs. Eager to make their own mark in this world-famous region, they developed a whole new expression in their Bauchant Orange Liqueur. Totally unique when it was introduced in the 1970s, it is still one of the only orange liqueurs made in Cognac.
The recipe for Bauchant Orange Liqueur has remained unchanged for over 50 years. Artfully crafted exclusively from premium-quality ingredients, the liqueur is made with only VS and VSOP Cognacs, as well as three different orange varieties. Most orange liqueurs use just one type of orange, but Maison Roullet-Fransac wanted to give greater complexity and depth to their orange Bauchant. This level of care continues in the distillery, where the triple-distilled, aged cognac bases are carefully blended to achieve the final spirit.
Bauchant Orange Liqueur was exported to the U.S. not long after it was first conceived — it was one of the first orange liqueurs to hit the market and has become a staple in upscale cocktail bars and restaurants. Bauchant has also impressed the critics, winning 90+ point scores and gold medals from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, Wine Enthusiast, and the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition.
With its fresh, light, and sweet-citrus flavor profile, Bauchant Orange Liqueur is delicious all on its own. For the mixologist, it’s also a delicious addition to Margaritas, Cosmopolitans, Mai Tais, Side Cars, and myriad other cocktails. However it’s poured and enjoyed, Bauchant Orange Liqueur — in its trademark, towering bottle — stands out for its innovative origins, unique recipe, and premium quality.

One of Cognac’s Only Orange Liqueurs
Bauchant means “beautiful song” in French and is a perfect encapsulation of the liqueur’s gorgeous homeland, southwestern France’s world-famous Cognac region. Dotted by tree groves and graced by the Charente River, Cognac’s rolling countryside is part of the northern Aquitaine basin plains. The mild climate and chalky soils yield highly acidic grapes, which are well suited to producing Cognac, the region’s iconic, eponymous distilled wine and a key ingredient in Bauchant Orange Liqueur. While many fine liqueurs call Cognac home, Bauchant remains a prominent orange liqueur made here.
Made from Fine Cognac and Three Orange Varieties
Bauchant Orange Liqueur stands head-and-shoulders above its competition, thanks both to its gracefully tall bottle and ultra-premium ingredients. The distillery team adds only VS and VSOP Cognac, sourced from carefully selected growers in the Cognac region. VS (short for “very special”) refers to an aged Cognac liqueur crafted from eaux-de-vie (brandy) aged for at least two years. VSOP (“Very Superior Old Pale”) indicates a Cognac made from eaux-de-vie aged for at least four years. Using higher-quality Cognac results in greater depth and elegance in the final Bauchant liqueur.
Additionally, while most of their competitors use only one type of orange in their liqueurs, the Bauchant team combines three different orange varieties. Andalusian oranges offer a balance of bitterness and sweetness, while mandarin and tangerine oranges have sweet profiles. The mixture of bitter and sweet oranges gives an extra level of complexity to the fresh, light, and citrusy palate of orange Bauchant.
Triple Distilled and Aged in Seasoned Wood Casks
The Bauchant team puts the utmost care into crafting their flavored Cognac liqueur. Before distillation, they allow the sweet and bitter peels from the andalusian, mandarin, and tangerine oranges to macerate in neutral alcohol, which extracts the fresh citrus flavors. The spirit then undergoes three distillations to create a cleaner, more concentrated taste profile. After these distillations, the team adds the VS and VSOP Cognac, along with syrup, to the blend.
As the finishing touch, the team ages the liqueur in seasoned wood casks for several years, which increases its flavor complexity and makes for a smoother mouthfeel. At the end of the process, Bauchant Orange Liqueur offers 40% ABV, a beautiful harvest-gold color, delicate orange and tangerine aromas, plus a complex, elegant palate with intense fruit flavors and hints of caramel and butterscotch.
