Background

Tenuta Campomaccione, in the province of Grosseto, was the Zingarelli family’s first acquisition in Tuscany’s Maremma. The estate’s potential to yield viticultural results of the finest quality was immediately apparent, and in 1999 the Zingarelli family began the task of identifying and planting the best parcels for Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Vermentino. The Casa Maria farm was added to the Zingarelli family’s Maremma holdings in 2003. Proximity to the sparkling Tyrhennian Sea and gently rolling hillsides create the ideal conditions for top quality Tuscan Vermentino.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Grapes are sourced from the Casamaria vineyard in Maremma, where warm, dry Mediterranean sea breezes foster the development of a distinctive freshness and minerality. Brackish maritime breezes cool and ventilate the vines through the night and early morning while the afternoon Tuscan sun nourishes the fruit to the perfect degree of ripeness by the time of harvest. Soils are composed of sand, enriched with quartz and limestone.

Winemaking & Aging

Grapes picked very early in the morning and kept in an oxygen-free environment to preserve freshness. Soft pressing of the grapes to avoid over-extraction. Temperature-controlled maceration, 12 hours at a cool temperature of 50-54°F to retain fresh fruit flavors and temperature-controlled fermentation (65-68°F) for about 10-12 days in stainless steel. Refining on the lees for few months in stainless steel and cement tank before bottling in oxygen-free environment, to promote balance between fruit, acidity, and phenols.

Tasting Notes

Straw yellow color. Floral and bright on the nose with aromas of acacia, yellow-fleshed stone fruits, and lime zest. Fresh and round on the palate, reflecting the nose with saline and mineral undertones. Persistent and well-balanced.

Best Buy

A nose that’s heady and sweet in an indulgent way, with grapefruit candy, green apple, almond and honey, opens for a palate that reiterates these flavors but with a sophisticated restraint and a salty, astringent finish. Best Buy. —D.C.

Aromatic, with a toasted-grain character to the ripe pear and lemon fruit. Medium-bodied with the same savory character taking center-stage, but the fruit is ever-present, too. A light phenolic touch along the way. An interesting take on Tuscan vermentino. Drink now. – J.S.
