Background

For well over 50 years, the Zingarelli family has dedicated themselves to crafting the finest wines, providing meticulous attention to the vineyards and championing Chianti Classico DOC. Established in 1973 by acclaimed Italian film producer Italo Zingarelli, Rocca delle Macìe totals 600 hectares (1,500 acres) across six estates in Tuscany. Led today by Italo's son Sergio, his wife Daniela and two children, Rocca delle Macìe is one of Tuscany's leading wine estates. This wine encapsulates the very best of the Chianti Classico DOCG and its vineyards by selecting only indigenous varieties of the DOCG to best express the regions terroir. Rocca delle Macìe is one of the few wineries in Tuscany to put a Gran Selezione at the very top of their quality pyramid, versus an IGT / Super Tuscan selection. The winery is a strong advocate for the terroir of Chianti Classico and the Sangiovese grape. Sergio, a two-time president of the Chianti Classico Growers Consortium, continues to be one of the DOCG's strongest proponents.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The grapes come from the Le Terrazze vineyard of the Le Macìe estate in Castellina in Chianti. The surface area is 3 hectares selected out of 5 total, and they were planted in 2000. The vineyard miocene deposits, composed of marly limestone, loamy-clay, alkaline, highly calcareous, and rich in skeletal elements (Alberese) with a southeast exposure. After 10 days of alcoholic fermentation and 21 days of post-fermentation maceration on the skins, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in concrete tanks. It is then aged in small barrels of 25hl French oak (Troncais) for 18 months, followed by a minimum of 20 months of bottle aging.

Sergio Zingarelli is president of the Rocca delle Macìe estate, taking over from his late father, Italo Zingarelli, a former boxer and filmmaker who bought the 600ha estate in 1973. International and Italian grape varieties are farmed organically, alongside 80ha of olive groves. This Gran Selezione is aged in French oak barriques for 18 months. Andrea Briccarello: A nose of dark fruits with plenty of seductive, ripe, wild elements. Hints of pomegranate and rhubarb exude from the glass. Beautifully crafted with plenty of dark plums and juicy currants. Great gripping tannins and lingering fruit notes. Susan Hulme MW: Sweet wild strawberries and red cherries on the nose, with creamy oak spice. Very warm and inviting on the palate; enough fruit to support the lavish oak. Very fine tannins. Supremely harmonious. Andrew Jefford: Breezy and chic fruits with well-judged oak and incipient secondary complexities. Concentrated and beguiling on the palate, with a sweet note which gradually softens and fills as it sits in the mouth. It’s rich yet far from vulgar, full of the nuance of field and forest as well as vineyard.

Cellar Selection

Aromas of underbrush, toast, French oak, blue flower and a whiff of culinary spice slowly take shape. Taut, velvetty tannins provide a firm, polished framework for flavors of Marasca cherry, cassis, licorice and espresso.
