Background

Paradoxically, Italy’s most famous metodo classico sparkling wine was started with the desire to compete with the best French Champagnes. Giulio Ferrari, a Trentino native, started his venerable sparkling wine house in 1902, after studying winemaking in France. Convinced that his native region’s terroir was ideal for growing Chardonnay, he produced three of his now best-known cuvées – Ferrari Brut, Perlé and Giulio Ferrari – as blanc de blancs. This innovative approach quickly paid off. Ferrari wines consistently receive some of Italy’s top accolades, including being awarded Tre Bicchieri 22 years in a row.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Overall, the year 2015 was hot and dry. There were favorable weather conditions until June, with little rainfall in the summer period; irrigation therefore was essential to cope with the seasonal trend. A mild winter and a regular spring followed. The harvest began in the last days of August. From a qualitative point of view, the altitude factor was very important, given the generally hot year: the altitude of the vineyards dedicated to the production of this Riserva made it possible to maintain a good acidity content of the grapes accompanied by great complexity, structure and aromatic finesse.

Winemaking & Aging

A beguiling synthesis of tradition and innovation, it is the only wine from Ferrari whose first fermentation takes place in large Austrian oak casks, as in the days of Bruno Lunelli. This origin in wood gives it greater body, an intriguing richness on the palate and a harmonious roundness of flavour. This wine is aged at least seven years in bottle.

Tasting Notes

Rich appearance with bright gold hues. Fine bubbles traverse the steady goblet. The nose is distinctively complex, with flavors of yellow fruit, toasted almond, licorice, panforte and cinnamon. Tones of coffee and anise slowly emerge with oxygenation. The flavor texture is rich and elegant, the sip is balanced and enveloping, the carbonic is refined and creamy, and the persistence is long. The finish recalls spicy and sweet pastry notes. Extraordinarily versatile when matched with food and ideal for drinking throughout a meal.

Ground ginger and wildflowers swirl around warm, baking apples, creating a nose that’s both cozy and fresh. A pop of zippy lemon follows, with a punchy hit of tart lemon curd adding a crisp edge. This wine plays between warmth and zing, keeping each sip lively and irresistibly drinkable, yet time in the cellar will do magic. Drink now–2040. Taub Family Selections. Cellar Selection. —J.P.

Seventy years ago, Bruno Lunelli was using big Slavonian casks, and this Riserva Lunelli harks back to that traditional style – although today, untoasted Austrian Stockinger casks are preferred. From the estate's Chardonnay vineyards surrounding the 16th century Villa Margon property, its aromas are reminiscent of Puligny Montrachet with a smoky, flinty edge filled in with patisserie and woody, dusty touches. The attack in the mouth is intense, with a juicy and sapid mid-palate and an unctuous, salty, orange peel and apricot finish which stimulates the appetite. Disgorged 2022.– J.B.

Subtle at first, this complex sparkling wine evokes aromas of toasted hazelnuts, candied lemon, baking spices and toasted oak. The full-bodied palate opens with baked apple, pie crust and vanilla cream then leads you to a flinty and crushed rock note finishing with a finessed and elegant perlage. Drink now–2030. —J.P.

The 2015 Extra Brut Ferrari Riserva Lunelli wafts up from the glass with a sweetly seductive mix of ginger and cinnamon spice, complementing baked apple and pear. This washes across the palate with cooling minerality, as tart orchard fruits and notes of raw almond resonate throughout. The finish is long and full of zesty tension, keeping the mouth watering with notes of sour lime and a salty flourish that lingers on and on. This is already showing beautifully today, but it has a bright future. (L 22096/601, June 2022) -E.G.

Subdued aromas suggesting toasted hazelnut, bread crust and mature white stone fruit shape the nose. The dry, linear, rather lean palate picks up where the nose leaves off, offering coconut, oak, Meyer lemon and yellowapple skin. An elegant perlage and crisp acidity accompany the linear palate. —K.O.
