A Visionary Tribute to the “Father of Pinot Grigio”

Infine family of bottles - Infine 1939

In 1939, David S. Taub, the “Father of Pinot Grigio,” was born. Beyond introducing pinot grigio to America, he strove to showcase Italy’s finest wines, dedicating 36 years to pursuing his dream with some of the most renowned winemakers in the world. His vision lives on with Infiné 1939, a pure expression of pinot grigio from the most unique Trentino vineyards.

Infiné 1939 was brought to life and was driven personally by Marc D. Taub, President & CEO of Palm Bay International, and his son Jake (David’s son and grandson, respectively). They aimed to commemorate David’s lifelong goal to champion Italian wine — most notably, pinot grigio from northern Italy. As their first order of business, they partnered with Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s top winemakers and a recipient of multiple “Winemaker of the Year” awards. Then, they enlisted the Edmund Mach Foundation, Italy’s premier winemaking school, to find the ideal vineyards.

With a phenomenal team in place and the right vineyard sites secured, Marc’s mind wandered to the name. It wasn’t until weeks later, while on a family vacation, that Etta James stepped in. Strains of her recording of “At Last” wafted into earshot, and instantly Jake thought of his granddad, who’d always loved the song. Something — call it that famous Taub intuition — urged him to look up the Italian translation for “at last.” Infiné. Such a lovely, lilting word that also winked at the infinite, a timeless linking of generations. The addition of “1939,” David’s birth year, further deepened the connection; to their age-worthy field blend, they added the English “At Last.”

For the crowning touch, Marc designed a custom bottle. David had been an avid collector of glass and always brought something new home every time he traveled — everything from fine Lalique and Tiffany to Italy’s signature Murano. With its high shoulders (David’s favorite shape), beveled inlay, and embossed punt, the dark green glass bottle is a work of art unto itself — and only hints at the breathtaking liquid inside.

Infiné 1939 wines have gone on to win huge industry acclaim, including 90+ point scores from Wine Enthusiast, Vinous, and Wine & Spirits. Thanks to Marc, Jake, and Carlo’s tireless efforts, David’s dream of sharing high-quality wines from Trentino with American wine lovers lives on.

Terroir

To ensure the utmost quality, Marc D. Taub and winemaker Carlo Ferrini engaged the Edmund Mach Foundation, Italy’s premier winemaking school, to determine the best Trentino vineyard sites for their Infiné wines. For the pinot grigio, they identified two areas, Bleggio Superiore and the Valle di Cavedine, and two clones, which grow at the highest possible elevation (396 meters / 1,300 feet above sea level). These clones adapt well to the cool alpine climate and calcareous glacial soils, resulting in smaller, sparser bunches of intensely concentrated grapes.

The grapes for At Last Cuvée Bianco come from the Valle dei Laghi, nestled between the mountains at the feet of the Dolomites. With a sub-Mediterranean climate, constant wind, and relatively high altitude (245 meters / 803 feet), it’s an ideal area for producing complex, elegant, and age-worthy wines from aromatic white grape varieties.

Viticulture

For the signature pinot grigio wine, the Infiné 1939 team sources grapes from four vineyards in Bleggio Superiore and five vineyards in the Valle di Cavedine. The average vine age is 15 years and 28 years, respectively. Both sites have incredibly low yields — just 45 hectoliters per hectare / 481 gallons per acre— and the grapes are harvested entirely by hand.

At Last Cuvée Bianco blends sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, gewürztraminer, and riesling renano grapes grown in two vineyards in the Valle dei Laghi. The vines are trained using the Guyot and cordon spur training systems, with a planting density of 5,550 vines per hectare. Grape production does not exceed 1.3 kg of fruit per plant, and the harvest is done by hand.

The Purest Expression of Trentino Wine

Infiné 1939’s pinot grigio wine and At Last Cuvée Bianco ferment in stainless steel to preserve their freshness and primary fruit flavors. At Last refines on its lees until bottling, then ages in the bottle for eight months before release for added depth and complexity. Both wines come in uniquely shaped bottles, designed in Italy, with an octagonal indention that frames the label. The design pays tribute to David’s passion for collecting beautiful glass artifacts.
