Background

Jean-Luc Colombo has been a renowned enologist in the Rhône Valley since the early 1980s. His consultations at prestigious estates across the Rhône quickly earned him a reputation for helping produce incredible expressions of this rugged terroir. But his greatest contribution to the wine world is the exceptional wines he crafts alongside his wife, Anne, and daughter, Laure. The Cornas-based Colombo winery has earned impressive international recognition bringing modern viticultural practices to the region — and for creating beautifully concentrated, balanced, and fresh styles of syrah. Living among their vineyards and wetlands, the family have been committed to sustainable farming, achieving organic certification for their estate vineyards from Ecocert in 2016.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The vineyards have light, stony, limestone soil and are located at the North of Aix-en-Provence, near the city of Salon-de-Provence. The area has Mediterranean climate and vegetation (thyme, lavender, oaks, pine trees) with maritime influences. The 2022 vintage was harvested in mid-August (earlier than previous years). Despite the heat and water stress, the fruit was healthy and plentiful and overall reflect a good vintage.

Winemaking & Aging

Traditional saignée method with fermentation at a low temperatures. The wine is then bottled quickly to preserve its freshness and fruit.

Tasting Notes

A classical pale pink color. The wine reveals strawberry, bing cherry and raspberry accented by subtle herbaceous notes and classic watermelon. The wine is full bodied with a long finish due to the phenolic development.

Composed of Syrah and Mourvèdre, this rosé sits pretty in the glass with flecks of rose gold. An expressive nose transports you to the Mediterranean coast with a fresh lilac bouquet, watermelon, peach, wild thyme and rose petals. Brisk acidity complements a fleshy texture and adds length to its saline, stony finish. A versatile summer companion that can hold its own from first to last course. —A.C.C.
