Background

Jean-Luc Colombo has been a renowned enologist in the Rhône Valley since the early 1980s. His consultations at prestigious estates across the Rhône quickly earned him a reputation for helping produce incredible expressions of this rugged terroir. But his greatest contribution to the wine world is the exceptional wines he crafts alongside his wife, Anne, and daughter, Laure. The Cornas-based Colombo winery has earned impressive international recognition bringing modern viticultural practices to the region — and for creating beautifully concentrated, balanced, and fresh styles of syrah. Living among their vineyards and wetlands, the family have been committed to sustainable farming, achieving organic certification for their estate vineyards from Ecocert in 2016.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Les Abeilles (The Bees) is named for the bees that inhabit the vineyards in the southern Rhône Valley where this Côtes du Rhône is produced. The bees thrive in these vineyards because no harsh pesticides are used. Colony Collapse Disorder is threatening honey bees and their crucial role in agriculture. The Colombo family, life-long beekeepers and grape growers, are committed to combating this global concern and along with the Taub Family Selections have developed the Bee Helpful Program. For every consumer purchase of Jean-Luc Colombo Les Abeilles (“the bees”) Côte du Rhône Rouge or Blanc a donation is made to the UC Davis Department of Entomology in support of their research to help restore healthy honey bee colonies.

Winemaking & Aging

The grapes are grown on 25-year-old vines and harvested manually, then de-stemmed, lightly crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is refined for ten months before bottling in stainless steel tanks.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of violets combine with plums and cassis. This is a silky wine with dark red fruit and a hint of spice on the palate.

Made from 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, this wine bursts with juicy blackberry, Amarena cherry, violets, anise and allspice. Soft tannins highlight the fruitiness, making it easily drinkable. With a slight chill, this is even more of a crowd-pleaser Taub Family Selections. Best Buy. —A.C.C.
