Background

Jean-Luc Colombo has been a renowned enologist in the Rhône Valley since the early 1980s. His consultations at prestigious estates across the Rhône quickly earned him a reputation for helping produce incredible expressions of this rugged terroir. But his greatest contribution to the wine world is the exceptional wines he crafts alongside his wife, Anne, and daughter, Laure. The Cornas-based Colombo winery has earned impressive international recognition bringing modern viticultural practices to the region — and for creating beautifully concentrated, balanced, and fresh styles of syrah. Living among their vineyards and wetlands, the family have been committed to sustainable farming, achieving organic certification for their estate vineyards from Ecocert in 2016.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Les Forots (The Forest) Côtes du Rhône Rouge is made from 60-year-old vines in the northern Rhône Valley. The Syrah grapes are from a limestone outcrop within the Cornas appellation.

Winemaking & Aging

Hand harvested bunches are 100% de-stemmed and lightly crushed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged for nine months, 25% in one- to four-year-old oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, violets, spices, and licorice. Harmonious with an elegant structure; appealing flavors of small ripe berry fruits (raspberries, blackberries and blueberries) and notes of licorice and spices.

91
Points

This blend of roughly equal parts Grenache and Syrah offers ripe but restrained blackberry and plum flavors accented by smoky tones of fire-roasted chestnuts and scorched earth. While moderately full in style, it’s a powerful, penetrating wine, with more gravitas than you expect from a typical Côtes du Rhône bottling. It’s approachable now, but should drink well through 2027. —A.I.
