Background

Since 1626, the Trimbach family have been a reference point for fine Alsace wine. They are also one of the largest owners of Grand Cru vineyards in the region which account for an impressive third of their total production. At every level, their wines embody the celebrated Trimbach style: structured, long-lived, fruit-driven, dry, elegant, and above all balanced. Family is also central to everyday life at Trimbach. Winemaking is expertly managed by 12th-generation Pierre, alongside his nephew Julien.  Pierre’s brother, Jean, and Pierre’s daughter Anne, the eldest of the 13th generation, are global brand ambassadors. In 2023, Trimbach was certified HVE-3 Organic reflecting their dedication to creating the highest-caliber expressions of their terroir.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The grapes come from Trimbach’s vines and those of their partner winegrowers. They are located on hillside terroirs on the sub-Vosges hills. The soils date from the Triassic period, on Muschelkalk: shell limestone, dolomite and marl, and from the Jurassic period with limestone and marls, with south/southeast exposure. 2020 had a mild winter and spring with flowering in early June followed by a very dry and hot summer. The rain finally appeared and allowed the grapes to ripen in optimal conditions with acidity preserved by surprisingly cool nights throughout the summer.

Winemaking & Aging

Grapes are selected at maturity then crushed and delicately pressed in a pneumatic press. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats. There is no secondary malolactic fermentation, or long aging on lees, in order to maintain as much natural acidity as possible, and preserve freshness, liveliness, and fruity aromas. Bottled in spring, then two years of aging minimum in the cellar.

Tasting Notes

The aromatic expression of this grape variety dominates, the very definition of the gewurztraminer from Alsace, well-anchored in the dry and balanced-style of the Trimbach family. Its very elegant bouquet, its crunchiness and its notes of roses, lychee, and citrus fruit lead to a lively and fresh finish.

Points

The 2020 Gewurztraminer opens clear, bright and fresh on the nose that is still dominated by rather spicy phenolics at this early stage. Round, lush and elegant on the palate, this is a refined, tense and salty/mineral wine with a serious and stimulating structure. Tasted in June 2024. -S.R.
