Background

Since 1626, the Trimbach family have been a reference point for fine Alsace wine. They are also one of the largest owners of Grand Cru vineyards in the region which account for an impressive third of their total production. At every level, their wines embody the celebrated Trimbach style: structured, long-lived, fruit-driven, dry, elegant, and above all balanced. Family is also central to everyday life at Trimbach. Winemaking is expertly managed by 12th-generation Pierre, alongside his nephew Julien.  Pierre’s brother, Jean, and Pierre’s daughter Anne, the eldest of the 13th generation, are global brand ambassadors. In 2023, Trimbach was certified HVE-3 Organic reflecting their dedication to creating the highest-caliber expressions of their terroir.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles (“selection of noble berries”) is a rare wine which requires exceptional conditions for production; a long growing season affected at the end by botrytis cinerea, or “Noble Rot”. The Trimbachs produce Selection de Grains Nobles only when they believe the quality is high enough to produce such an extraordinary wine. Selection de Grains Nobles was produced only in 1967, 1971, 1983, 1886, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2000 and 2001. Grapes for this estate-bottled Selection de Grains Nobles are sourced from Grand Cru Osterberg in Ribeauvillé and 40-year-old vines in Hunawihr from the vineyard Muelforst. The well-drained vineyards, facing south, contain argilo-cacaire soil over a deep limestone base, excellent for growing Gewürztraminer. The yield is only 18 hl/ha. Gewurztraminer Selection de Grains Nobles is made from selected grapes affected by noble rot (botrytis cinerea). It is fermented in stainless steel, with no malolactic fermentation and bottled at the estate the following spring.

Tasting Notes

A beautiful deep golden color. An exotic nose of passion fruit, mango, and papaya, that lead to honey notes and spices from the noble rot that developed on the berries. The wine shows a liquid gold mouthfeel. Sweetness is balanced by a beautiful acidity and ethereal quality.

95
Points

Luminous yellow-gold. Saffron, honey, mirabelle, peach, and dried apricot on the captivating nose. Enters rich, dense and concentrated, but lively acidity provides an amazing light-on-its-feet quality while extending the ripe, spicy tropical fruit flavors on the long, silky mouthfeel. Multilayered and deep, this outstanding SGN showcases delightful acid-fruit balance that makes it seem less sweet than it is. -- I.D.
