Background

Since 1626, the Trimbach family have been a reference point for fine Alsace wine. They are also one of the largest owners of Grand Cru vineyards in the region which account for an impressive third of their total production. At every level, their wines embody the celebrated Trimbach style: structured, long-lived, fruit-driven, dry, elegant, and above all balanced. Family is also central to everyday life at Trimbach. Winemaking is expertly managed by 12th-generation Pierre, alongside his nephew Julien.  Pierre’s brother, Jean, and Pierre’s daughter Anne, the eldest of the 13th generation, are global brand ambassadors. In 2023, Trimbach was certified HVE-3 Organic reflecting their dedication to creating the highest-caliber expressions of their terroir.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Pierre Trimbach and his team have been working the Grand Cru Geisberg behind the domaine for years. Previously this parcel was dedicated to being assembled with with GC Osterberg into the famous Frédéric Émile. 2009 was the first Grand Cru Geisberg produced. One of the three smaller Grand Crus in Alsace, it is only 8.53 ha. The Trimbach’s 2.6 ha plot is on limestone and dolomite marl soil, with old vines over 50 years old, small terraces with steep slopes facing south - creating a unique terroir.

Winemaking & Aging

The grapes are selected at maturity then crushed and delicately pressed in a pneumatic press. Vinified in a dry style in stainless steel vats. No malolactic fermentation or long aging on lees in order to preserve freshness, liveliness and fruity aromas.

Tasting Notes

Pronounced aromas of citrus, candied fruit, honey and bergamot. The acidity is precise and, coupled with optimal ripeness, provides a juicy sensation of fresh lemon. Fantastic energy and structure with saline mineral notes. Delicious in its youth, it is a wine that can be kept for over 20 years and which will then reveal all the richness and complexity of its terroir.

For the very hot year this has extraordinary vitality and is diamond-bright! A bit richer and more compact on the full-bodied palate than the crystalline nose suggested. I love the lemon-grass and dried-sage character and lemon-peel freshness. Incredibly long and complete finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. -S.P.

The generous and herbal nose of the 2018 Riesling Grand Cru Geisberg is very clear, intense, concentrated and saline. On the palate, this is a rich and powerful, fleshy and almost viscous Geisberg, with fine tannins and rather smooth acidity and 14.5% stated alcohol. It's naturally long and powerful and accessible earlier than the 2019. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024 and again on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Clos Ste Hune at the beginning of November, with the same result, but this note: The 2018 Geisberg Riesling is deep, very intense and aromatic on the nose that represents the very dry and warm vintage. Full-bodied, rich and very powerful on the palate, this is a massive and muscular, luckily also saline-finishing Riesling that is still a bit edgy and will still need years to refine and gain in finesse. It is doubtlessly a complex and potential wine. -S.R.

Intensely herbal in a good way, with green herb oil cruising alongside apple, chrysanthemum and quince flavors on a silky palate. Bracing and fresh despite its age, with elegance and impressively long, delectable, mineral-driven finish. Cilantro seed. bay leaf and acacia hins add detail. Time has mellowed this Riesling, yet vibrant energy shines through. Drink now through 2030. —K.B.
