Background

Since 1626, the Trimbach family have been a reference point for fine Alsace wine. They are also one of the largest owners of Grand Cru vineyards in the region which account for an impressive third of their total production. At every level, their wines embody the celebrated Trimbach style: structured, long-lived, fruit-driven, dry, elegant, and above all balanced. Family is also central to everyday life at Trimbach. Winemaking is expertly managed by 12th-generation Pierre, alongside his nephew Julien.  Pierre’s brother, Jean, and Pierre’s daughter Anne, the eldest of the 13th generation, are global brand ambassadors. In 2023, Trimbach was certified HVE-3 Organic reflecting their dedication to creating the highest-caliber expressions of their terroir.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

In 2012, nearly 5 acres of the Grand Cru Schlossberg was aquired by the Trimbach family. The first vintage produced is 2014. Grand Cru Schlossberg has a granitic terroir – granite from Thannenkirch above Ribeauvillé and granite migmatite from Kaysersberg. Planted in horizontal terrasses, south facing, located next to the castle, just under the forest, the vineyard benefits from a cooler microcosm. The age of the vines is 35-40 years, with yields 35 hl/ha.

Winemaking & Aging

The grapes were handpicked as late as possible in order to achieve maximum ripeness, which in turn, gives optimum depth of flavor and complexity. After a very gentle pressing in a pneumatic press, the juice ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for three to four weeks.

Tasting Notes

Concentrated stone-fruit aromas with green apple, citrus and mineral finesse. Its stony, precise and balanced with lemon, pear and apple on the palate which lead to a lingering finish.

The 2020 Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru grows on granite with a little gneiss and benefits from the coolness of the altitude. A touch of green apple and a brighter, lighter citrus shines on the nose. It's beautifully cool, utterly stony, precise and concentrated, yet with the perfume of lemon, green pear and apple. (Bone-dry) -A.K.

This has rich stone-fruit aromas and a touch of something exotic, the balance of fruit and mineral freshness very impressive, the power and concentration underplayed until you get to the long, complete finish, where they show their hand strongly. Drink or hold. –J.S.

Still a bit compacted, this shows both richness and precision, with pronounced lemon and grapefruit flavors that are mouthwatering and rich. Reveals a citrus-edged bitterness that adds nice contrast, while crushed mineral elements impart a chalky texture. Packing a lot of stuffing in a linear frame, this is definitely one for the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2040. 250 cases made, 100 cases imported. -K.B.

This is all about its corduroylike texture at this stage, layers peel off with air. It starts with subtle notes of flint and match stick, then mixing in fresh quince, nectarine, green pear and lemon-curd flavors, with a long finish. The acidity needs a few years to fully integrate, but this has an admirable potential. Taub Family Selections. —A.Z.

The 2020 Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling opens with warm and balanced, ripe and very elegant fruit with flinty notes. Supple, round and juicy on the palate, with fine tannins and lingering salinity, this is a quite powerful Schlossberg with a still slightly bitter finish. This will develop with more bottle age. This has 3.7 grams per liter of residual sugar and 13.6% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022. -S.R.
