Background

Since 1626, the Trimbach family have been a reference point for fine Alsace wine. They are also one of the largest owners of Grand Cru vineyards in the region which account for an impressive third of their total production. At every level, their wines embody the celebrated Trimbach style: structured, long-lived, fruit-driven, dry, elegant, and above all balanced. Family is also central to everyday life at Trimbach. Winemaking is expertly managed by 12th-generation Pierre, alongside his nephew Julien.  Pierre’s brother, Jean, and Pierre’s daughter Anne, the eldest of the 13th generation, are global brand ambassadors. In 2023, Trimbach was certified HVE-3 Organic reflecting their dedication to creating the highest-caliber expressions of their terroir.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Pinot Noir Réserve is from Trimbach’s own vineyards and those of their growers with the age of 40+ years old. The vineyards are located in the southern part of Alsace: Rodern and St Hippolyte, some based on granite, some on sandstone, and some from marl and limestone soils. This wine represents the unique mosaic of soils of our region. The vintage started with a harsh winter, heavy precipitation and snowy episodes. An early and fleeting spring led to a complicated summer, with lack of sun and heavy rain; however, a superb late season, with generous sunshine and significant thermal amplitudes paved the way for good maturity and acidity. The harvest turned out to be surprisingly exceptional!

Winemaking & Aging

Grapes are selected at maturity and after de-stemming, they undergo a gentle pneumatic pressing followed by an eight-day cold maceration to extract color and fruit. The juices are blended in the cellar in stainless steel vats and old casks for the malolactic fermentation. The Pinot Noirs are the only Trimbach wines which undergo malolactic fermentation (in tank); No long ageing on lees. They are bottled after three months ageing in stainless steel tanks.

Tasting Notes

Delicate aromas red and black berries underlined by subtle smoky and forest floor. Beautifully structured mouthfeel, combines fruitiness – Morello cherries and kirsch – with supple, velvety tannins and juicy freshness.

Points

Very good ripeness for the challenging vintage with open black cherry and blackberry fruit with delicate spicy and red beet aromas. Medium-bodied with quite lively acidity that neatly interlocks with the restrained tannins. Good length and excellent harmony at the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. -J.S.

Earth and licorice aromas give way to a beam of cherry flavors in this tightly wound red, with leafy and underbrush notes. The tannins are present but well integrated, supporting the long finish. —A.Z.

This Pinot comes from parcels in St Hippolyte, Rodern (both granitic and Triassic sandstone) and the limestone soils of Soulzmatt and Rouffach. The 2021 Pinot Noir Réserve is a pan-Alsace wine spanning south and north. This was aged in cement and large /foudre/. The nose is beautifully open and displays hints of iron oxide, tart red cherry and red forest fruits. The palate is taut and bright, light-bodied yet with a lovely edge of licorice and slightly crunchy tannins. The fruit is beautifully pure, tart and vivid. The finish is smooth with red-fruits and bright freshness. (Bone-dry) – A.K.
