Background

Since 1626, the Trimbach family have been a reference point for fine Alsace wine. They are also one of the largest owners of Grand Cru vineyards in the region which account for an impressive third of their total production. At every level, their wines embody the celebrated Trimbach style: structured, long-lived, fruit-driven, dry, elegant, and above all balanced. Family is also central to everyday life at Trimbach. Winemaking is expertly managed by 12th-generation Pierre, alongside his nephew Julien.  Pierre’s brother, Jean, and Pierre’s daughter Anne, the eldest of the 13th generation, are global brand ambassadors. In 2023, Trimbach was certified HVE-3 Organic reflecting their dedication to creating the highest-caliber expressions of their terroir.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Riesling is a grape variety that is particularly fond of the terroirs of the Ribeauvillé’s fault line for their soils and its famous microclimate, a magnificent synergy between grape variety and terroir. Over 70 year old vines from Grand Cru Rosacker and lieu dit Muehlforst, in Hunawihr, both seated on Muschelkalk soil with limestone, facing respectively South-East and South. Old vines 60+ years old from the lieu dit Vorderer Haguenau in Ribeauvillé, also nicknamed the “Little Geisberg” because of their terroir similarities, marl and limestone soil South exposure.

Winemaking & Aging

Handpicked as late as possible in order to achieve maximum ripeness, which in turn, gives optimum depth of flavor and complexity. The grapes are pressed very gently in a pneumatic press. The juice ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for three to four weeks. No malolactic fermentation, or long aging on lees, in order to preserve freshness, liveliness and fruity aromas. The wine is not oak-aged, and is vinified to complete dryness with no residual sugar.

Tasting Notes

Superb complexity and aromatic concentration thanks to old vines; Citrus aromas, white flowers. Beautiful fullness supported by crystalline fruitiness and fine and precise acidity.

Points

Rich, mouth-filling and highly structured, this has a touch of exotic aromas (mangosteen!), but isn’t a jot too ripe or weighty. In fact, it has wonderful silkiness, in spite of the considerable mineral power at the imposing finish. Drink or hold. – J.S.

James Suckling - December 2020

92
Points

A slightly nutty, slightly petrol aroma suggests that this light-bodied wine has gained some maturity. However, something more playful awaits on the palate, where a tangy sour orange or marmalade flavor prevails, with cleansing acidity and a slate note on the medium-length finish.
