Background

The Mastroberardino family, leaders in Italian viticulture, are largely responsible for the revival and elevation of Irpinian and Campanian winemaking post WWII. Their efforts ignited a resurgence in quality red and white wine production in all of Southern Italy. Working primarily with Campania’s ancient, native varieties, Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico, Mastroberardino has resuscitated would-be extinct grapes into world-class varieties. Lacrimarosa, meaning pink tears, is named from the method of production, whereby Aglianico grapes are gently pressed, imparting a slight pink color and light, aromatic profile to the wine.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Grapes are sourced from the Lapio and Pietradefusi vineyards, characterized by calcareous and clay-loam soils. Vines are Espalier-trained and Cordon spur pruned and sit at an average 400m a.s.l. Vines are planted at a density of 2,500 vines/ha.

Winemaking & Aging

Hand harvested in October, grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Refinement in bottle at least one month prior to release.

Tasting Notes

Pale pink. Fruit forward, with a delicate bouquet of white peaches, honey, strawberries, raspberries, peonies, and red currants.

92
Points

Wild strawberries, mint leaf and wet stone form an inviting bouquet as the 2023 Rosato Lacrimarosa blossoms in the glass. This is crisp, fresh and wonderfully perfumed, with a tinge of sour citrus that offsets its core of ripe orchard fruits. It tapers off remarkably fresh, leaving a reverberation of zesty tension as hints of licorice fade. This is Aglianico Rosato at its very best. -E.G.
