Background

The Mastroberardino family, leaders in Italian viticulture, are largely responsible for the revival and elevation of Irpinian and Campanian winemaking post WWII. Their efforts ignited a resurgence in quality red and white wine production in all of Southern Italy. Working primarily with Campania’s ancient, native varieties, Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico, Mastroberardino has resuscitated would-be extinct grapes into world-class varieties. Rigorous research into the Greco grape variety and replanting this once forgotten white in carefully selected vineyards, has led to the development of Nova Serra Greco di Tufo, an iconic wine of the estate. Featured on the label is a reproduction of a Raffaele De Rosa painting, featured on the vaults of Mastroberardino’s historic cellar.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The Montefusco vineyard is dedicated solely to the production of Nova Serra Greco di Tufo. It has a south-east exposure, with clay-calcareous soil and traces of volcanic ash along the profile. Positioned 550m a.s.l., the vines are Cordon spur-pruned and Espalier-trained, with a planting density of 4,000 vines/ha and a yield of about 6,000 kg/ha (1.5kg/vine). The vines have an average age of 15 years.

Winemaking & Aging

Manual harvest takes place at the end of October. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Refinement in bottle for three to four months before release.

Tasting Notes

Deep straw yellow. Scents of apricot, pear, apple, peach, citrus fruits, and green almonds are followed by subtle notes of sage and minerals. Bright acidity and excellent structure carries ripe fruit flavors across the palate.

92
Points

This is an angular and sharply contoured white wine with an intense sense of linearity and focus. The 2021 Greco di Tufo NovaSerra is a little reduced on first nose, but those flinty aromas lift quickly to show jack fruit, mulberry, fresh fig and unsweetened citrus. The wine quickly builds momentum in the mouth and ultimately offers a firm, structurally pronounced approach that would pair beautifully with fried fish. –M.L.

Wine Advocate - October 2022

Points

Aromas of dried peaches, fennel and light earth follow through to a medium-bodied palate with good balance and focus. The slight bitterness that creeps in at the end isn’t unwelcome. Drink now. -J.S.

James Suckling - January 2023

90
Points

A well-meshed, lithe white, with macerated raspberry and ripe melon flavors on the palate underscored by minerally slate and saline accents. Boasts blanched almond and Earl Grey tea notes, which accent the fruit and mineral elements and linger on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 70,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported. –A.N.
