Nevio Where Quality, Tradition, and Passion Meet
With its head-turning packaging and lush, food-friendly wines, Nevio embodies the spirit of Italy’s rugged Abruzzo region. These 100% estate-grown and bottled Abruzzo wines offer premium drinking at an approachable price … and an exciting opportunity for wine lovers to discover a still largely under-the-radar spot on Italy’s fine wine map.
Tribes, war, empire, wine: The Abruzzo has an extraordinary history stretching back thousands of years. To a historian, finding a relic from those bygone days buried in the area’s largely undeveloped, forested land would be no major surprise. But tell that to the simple vigneron who, while tilling his vineyard one day in 1934, stumbled on a remarkably well-preserved sculpture, poking up between the rows. Carved from a single stone and measuring 6-feet tall, the statue, now known as The Capestrano Warrior, is armor clad and thought to represent King Nevio Pompuledio.
This mysterious king’s namesake wine is brought to life by third-generation winemakers, the Redmont-DiTonno family (proprietors of Tenuta Talamonti) in the medieval village of Loreto Aprutino. Worthy of any feast — royal or otherwise — it is a rich showcase of the unique Abruzzo terroir and the region’s star grape, montepulciano.
Nevio Highlights
Nevio is 100% estate-grown and bottled montepulciano, crafted in the rugged Abruzzo.
Its name was inspired by the ancient Warrior of Capestrano statue, unearthed in 1934 among the vines and thought to represent ancient King Nevio.
The striking label is a rustic nod to when wine labels were still written by hand.
Abruzzo: An Undiscovered Jewel of Italy
The Abruzzo is one of the wine world’s hidden gems. While nearly a third of the land remains untouched as national parks or nature preserves, it is an epicenter of wine and food culture (and home to some of the world’s leading pasta producers). Located just two hours east of Rome, Abruzzo has grown and produced wine since the 6th — some say the 4th — century BC, making it one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world. Nevio’s grapes are grown in Loreto Aprutino, a medieval village clinging to a hillside between the coast of Pescara and the Gran Sasso — it is considered one of Italy’s most beautiful coastlines.
Abruzzo’s Rugged Terroir
In geographic terms, Abruzzo is a marvel. With its rugged mountains — including Gran Sasso, one of Italy’s highest peaks — pristine coastline, and plentiful, lush forests, it has quite the varied landscape. Warmer and drier on the coast and more continental inland, Abruzzo also enjoys a wide diurnal temperature swing, thanks to its high altitudes. It is an ideal place for viticulture, especially for montepulciano, the grape behind the region’s flagship red wine, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
A Boutique Estate With a Big (Green) Heart
There has always been a clear focus on sustainability as a major aspect of Nevio’s mission, and the Nevio winery has several concrete examples of how they’ve protected and nurtured their terroir.
With sufficient rainfall in the region, there is no irrigation needed on the estate. This promotes both water efficiency and energy efficiency. Further, Nevio uses 100% renewable energy sourced from solar panels and windfarms. Use of various cover crops around the vineyard encourages biodiversity and eliminates the need for insecticides or herbicides. When that greenery decays and decomposes, it provides crucial nutrients for the soil. Any skins and pips that are discarded are also turned into compost after fermentation.
Tenuta Talamonti, where Nevio is crafted, was the first winery ever to be awarded the Gender Equality European & International Standard Diversity certification (GEEIS) — an international award demonstrating a significant commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities in the workplace to stimulate innovation, performance, and quality of life.
Three Generations of Abruzzo Devotion
Nevio is crafted at third-generation family winery, Tenuta Talamonti, owned, operated, and managed by the Redmont-Di Tonno family. Their love for Abruzzo runs deep and they admit to constantly marveling at all the gifts of their land: from watching the vines flower, to observing the bees traveling back and forth from their hives, to cultivating their very own olive oil — in addition to their incredible Nevio wines, of course.
