Background

Alvaro Palacios has spent decades pioneering a new order of fine wine across Spain. He has created some of the country’s most iconic wines by championing terroir and native grapes whose potential had been long overlooked and untapped. Palacios Remondo is his family’s Rioja estate, tucked in the far eastern corner of the Oriental district. The story in this rugged, high-altitude scrubland is about Garnacha—the territory’s traditional variety and also one of Alvaro’s biggest passions. By focusing on elevating Garnacha-driven wines that are expressive of and authentic to this stunning side of Rioja, Alvaro is continuing to reshape the future of Spanish fine wine.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Rioja Oriental is blessed with a warm, dry Mediterranean-influenced climate (unlike Rioja’s west, where the climate is more continental). The soils, formed by carbonate sedimentation with diverse colluviums containing deposits of volcanic ophite, quartz, and sandstone, covered with carbonate clay, sand, and silt. At varying depths, there is a poor, cold horizon containing petrocalcic calcium (calcium carbonate) with a distinctive white color—this is prized by many for its ability to impart a mineral-driven finesse to the wine. The grapes for Propiedad represent the pinnacle expressions of Palacios Remondo’s terroir and come from three estate vineyards: Las Mulgas, Valviejo and Corral Serrano Viejo. The soils between 0.5 and 2 meters thick are from the Quaternary Period, formed by carbonate sedimentation with colluviums of very diverse origin, containing volcanic ophite, quartz, sandstone, etc. covered with carbonate clay, sand, and silt. The exposure is east/northeast on the Yerga Mountain slopes with vineyard heights reaching between 400-640 meters (1,321-2,099 feet) above sea level with a vine age of 30-94 years old. The grapes were harvested between Sept. 28th and Oct. 6th.

Winemaking & Aging

The grapes were destemmed, crushed, and fermented with native yeasts in wooden vats with gentle cap immersion. Maceration took place over 35 days followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aging was 10 months in fudres and bocoyes (wooden cask) followed by fining but no filtration.

Tasting Notes

Elegant and concentrated with dried herbs, strawberry, blueberry, and baking spices ripple over subtle earthy notes and fine-grained tannins. The palate is seamless and beautifully balanced, with a mineral note and seductive mouthfeel.

The Propiedad bottling is not produced every year, and the 2021 Propiedad, mostly Garnacha (with 10% other grapes) from old organically farmed and head-pruned vines in the parajes of Las Mulgas, Cabecilla de la Ra and Valmira, fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It has the signature of this cuvée in a cooler year: elegant and fresh but not lacking power or concentration. It has a velvety, precise and seamless palate, with great freshness and balance, red berry and crushed stone flavors and a citrus twist of freshness. There is a lot more depth and complexity compared with the already exceptional La Montesa. It’s fine-boned and elegant, with very fine tannins and a precise and clean finish. It's also powerful and ripe at 14.5% alcohol, keeping a pH of 3.5 and 5.3 grams of acidity. 46,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023 after it spent 10 months in oak vats and barrels of different sizes. -L.G.

Vivid, racy fruit, full of strawberries, dark raspberries, pomegranate, mineral and rose hips. Subtle white pepper accent. The succulent medium-bodied palate is framed by bright berry fruit and fresh, chalky tannins. Intense but weightless, with a long, linear finish, full of energy and freshness. Delicious now, but can keep very well, too. – Z.S.

A lovely, silky red, showing pinpoint balance and overall harmony. Offers a generous range of ripe boysenberry, baked cherry, dried lavender and star anise notes, with a light tang of orange peel acidity and supple, fine-grained tannins. Long and graceful on the spiced finish. Drink now through 2034. —A.N.

The 2021 Propiedad is a blend of 90% Garnacha and 10% other red varieties, sourced from the Monte Yerga vineyards in Alfaro, Rioja Oriental. Fermented with 55% whole clusters, it aged for ten months in foudres to maintain its purity and proximity to the fruit. This ruby-red wine features a reductive nose with notes of sour cherry, elder and grapefruit, along with herbal undertones that create a dynamic interplay. On the palate, it is dry, lean and cleansing, lingering with a chalky, compact texture. This infusion-like red boasts an intense and vibrant mouthfeel, rich in nuance. -J.H.
