Background

Planeta’s journey began at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate owned by the family since the 1600s. Here, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of Diego Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Planeta today encompasses six distinct wine estates in five regions across Sicily; Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia, Dispensa at Menfi, Dorilli at Vittoria, Buonivini at Noto, Sciara Nuova on Etna at Castiglione di Sicilia, and the newest addition, La Baronia at Capo Milazzo. Each vineyard site is carefully cultivated with grapes that best compliment the local terroir. All of the company’s activities have a single theme; environmental sustainability.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The soil is composed of calcareous marl, abundant and small skeleton; fine texture with light colored clay fraction. The vinyards grow at an altitude of 40 meters above sea level.

Winemaking & Aging

The harvest period ran from August 25th through 30th. The grapes were picked when well ripened at the end of August and then dried in the fruit cellar. Six weeks of drying guaranteed a high concentration of sugars and some natural transformation of the grapes contributes to the extraordinary aromas of apricot, rose petals, papaya and quince. When half their weight has been lost, about 40 days later, the grapes are pressed and the must thus obtained, which is particularly rich in sugars.

Tasting Notes

Sweet and fleshy but also lively with citrus notes; It recalls nougat and candied ginger. Explosive aromas of exotic fruit, jasmine, candied citrus fruit are complex but easy to admire.

This has aromas of dried apricots, lemons, marmalade, sultanas, honeysuckle and some ginger. It's intense, luscious and sweet, yet vibrant and energetic. Tangy citrus notes and pretty spice character. Very long. Moscato bianco. Sustainable. Drink or hold. –J.S.

Enticing aromas of dried apricot and baking spice carry over to the smooth, savory palate along with lemon drop candy, ginger and fennel. Fresh acidity brightens the rich flavors. Absolutely delicious. Taub Family Selections. —K.O.

The Planeta 2019 Sicilia Passito di Noto (in a 500-milliliter bottle) is a delicately fragrant dessert wine with orange blossom or zagara, sweet almond paste, honey and night-blooming jasmine. What I like about this expression of air-dried Moscato Bianco is that the wine is never cloying or overly sweet. This opens the wine to more ambitious pairing possibilities such as aged or sharp cheeses or salty cold cuts. The wine sports a generous mid-weight style with nicely balanced acidity. This vintage shows nice fruit concentration too. Production is 22,000 bottles. -M.L.
