Background

Located in the rugged terrain of northern California, near the banks of the Upper Russian River and the foothills of the Mayacamas, Saracina Vineyards encompasses a 400-acre working ranch and California Certified Sustainable winery. Amidst breathtaking vistas and rolling hills, this biodiverse estate boasts a grove of 140-year-old olive trees, vegetable gardens, beehives, alpacas, goats, and a variety of native wildlife. Family lies at the core of the estate—a principle upheld since its establishment in 2001. Since 2018, the Taub family has proudly stewarded the land, forging an even stronger foundation for excellence through extensive soil analysis and pioneering a full organic conversion and water conservation system. With Saracina Vineyards, the Taub family is committed to bringing Mendocino to the forefront of quality winemaking, showcasing the unique terroir and dedication to sustainability that define their approach.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The grapes for this rosé are sourced from Teak Vineyard, the fruit grown on a well-drained, older block just adjacent to the Russian River. The year was marked by the end of the drought, with adequate rainfall, particularly in the early part of the growing season. Grapes were picked at a modest 22 Brix on October 7, 2023.

Winemaking & Aging

The grapes were hand-picked at dawn and a blend of whole clusters, destemmed, and lightly crushed fruit was loaded into a 1981 Bucher Vaslin press for a two hour soak prior to pressing. The juice was tank fermented cold and remained on lees for two months prior to bottling, which was done on March 1, 2024.

Tasting Notes

This 2023 rosé is the best and brightest yet, with citrus rind and alpine strawberry aromatics, an incredibly refreshing entry, great mid palate and pleasing length.

Points

This wine is pale-salmon hued, crisp and light. Aromas of peach, nectarine, pear, dried herbs and orange-blossom honey arise on the nose. The flavors on the palate are strawberry, raspberry, Red Vines, cream, dried basil and lime marmalade, with acidity and a great, dry finish. —T.P.
