Offering an Incredible Taste of Tuscany

Chianti landscape - Straccali

For generations of Americans, Chianti has served as an introduction to Italy’s red wines. Since 1925, the Straccali wine estate, founded by Giulio Straccali, has been in the vanguard of progressive Chianti wine producers. This boutique Tuscan winery strives to bring Giulio’s gusto for life to countless tables across the world, in the form of a delicious bottle of wine.

In 1978, Italo Zingarelli, founder of the renowned Rocca delle Macìe estate in Castellina in Chianti, began what has become a long and fruitful relationship with the Straccali family. United by a shared respect for tradition and ambition of achieving the dream set out by Giulio, the two families had the same goal: to invite the world to discover the tantalizing flavors and colors of Tuscany, using wine as an ambassador. The winery Straccali is proudly owned and managed by Sergio Zingarelli, Italo’s son, who works alongside his wife, Daniela, and their children, Andrea and Giulia.

Today, Straccali’s sterling reputation is synonymous with outstanding quality and exceptional value. The range includes vibrant Chianti and Chianti Classico wines from Tuscany, along with an elegant pinot grigio from Lombardy and primitivo from Puglia. The bottles’ bold, brightly colored labels stand out among their competition — remaining authentic to their Italian heritage, while capturing a more modern and fashionable Italian style.

The Straccali team is proud to offer affordable indulgence for every wine lover. Whether served at a holiday dinner, Sunday picnic, or after a long day at work, Straccali wines are as dependable as they are delicious. These are deep-rooted, classic-drinking wines that over-deliver every time — a true taste of Tuscany.

The Rich History of Chianti

Winemaking in Tuscany can be traced back to the seventh century BC. But it wasn’t until 1716 when Cosimo Ill de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, officially defined the production area of Chianti in a legal document. Today, Chianti stretches from Florence in the north to Siena in the south and has become one of Italy’s best known and most respected wine regions. Its medieval villages, cypress-lined roads, delicious cuisine, and of course, wonderful wines, attract tourists from across the world — just as Giulio Straccali dreamed.

Terroir

Giulio Straccali Chianti blends sangiovese, canaiolo, and merlot grapes grown in the province of Siena, along the border of Chianti Classico. While the vineyards here produce wines of similar quality to those from Chianti Classico, they are nevertheless outside of the designated area. Straccali Chianti Classico is crafted from sangiovese, canaiolo, and merlot grown in vineyards close to the village of San Casciano. The soils are characterized by a higher quantity of clay, limestone, and sea concrete, giving the wines elegant tannins and fresh flavors.

Alfio Auzzi, the Zingarelli family’s vineyard manager, takes direct care of Straccali’s Tuscan vineyards. He follows the regimen used in Rocca delle Macìe’s vineyards — including hand harvesting of grapes and the same sustainability practices.

Straccali Wines Remain True to Their Roots

Luca Francioni, Rocca delle Macìe’s winemaker, oversees winemaking at the Straccali estate. While he never met founder Giulio Straccali, Luca has always stayed true to Giulio’s original winemaking philosophy, which has produced quality, delicious wines for over a century. While specific techniques may vary, all Straccali wines have great drinkability and a terroir-forward style.

Giulio Straccali: A Legend in Chianti

Expert enologist, entrepreneur, farmer, and innovative visionary — Giulio Straccali was a pioneer in Tuscany’s prized Chianti region. Convinced of the need to protect and nurture the reputation of Chianti wines, he became a founding father of the Black Rooster Consortium, where he served as Vice President from 1942 until his death in 1969. Through his remarkable Tuscan wines, he sought to communicate the scents, colors, and flavors of his beloved homeland to the rest of the world. His legacy lives on today in Straccali wines.
