Five Hills, Three Roses, and Absolutely Singular Vino Nobiles

Estate exterior - Tenuta Trerose

On the slopes of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG (near the town of Montepulciano) perches the historic Tenuta Trerose estate. Its vineyards fan out over five rolling hills in a unique, amphitheater-style layout — prime sangiovese territory, specifically for the prugnolo gentile clone, which ripens late and gives rise to wines that are complex, elegant, and ageworthy.

In addition to growing incredible Vino Nobile, Tenuta Trerose is also home to the 16th-century Villa Romizi and a farm that dates to Roman times (the ruins of which include a well and an ancient mile marker denoting distance from Rome). Back then, the locale was quite strategic, straddling the Via Lauretana and the Canale Maestro della Chiana — two important trade routes used in the 1st and 2nd centuries. Over its hundreds of years of history, the property has had many owners, including Jacopo Vagnucci, an important bishop whose family’s coat of arms features a bear clutching a trio of roses, hence the name, “Trerose.”

Today, the estate covers 180 hectares / 445 acres, of which 78 hectares / 193 acres are under vine and 55 hectares / 136 acres are dedicated to the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The remainder is used for production of Rosso di Montepulciano and other wines. As part of Angelini Wines & Estates, Trerose enjoys the combined resources and winemaking expertise of its renowned parent company while winemaker Pietro Riccobono maintains complete autonomy for the stylistic direction of the wines.

Unique Soils and Precision Viticulture

Terroir

The Vino Nobile production zone is positioned on a hilly ridge between altitudes of 250 and 580 meters / 820 and 1,900 feet. The vineyards enjoy a favorable microclimate where the cold, continental climate of inland Tuscany is moderated by nearby Lake Trasimeno.

The unique soils here are of marine origin like the rest of Tuscany, and the deposits were affected by the collision of the African and European continental blocks, which formed open aquifers that filled up with water and later dried out, forming the area’s valleys, Valdichiana and Val d’Orcia. The sand and clay left behind were enriched with precious deposits of salt and silt, helping sangiovese achieve an impressive depth of color and a rounded quality, with softer tannins and a saline tang, distinguishing these “noble” wines from those of other areas of Tuscany.

Viticulture

Tenuta Trerose is committed to the principles of organic viticulture and embraces a philosophy that safeguards the land, its vineyards, and people. The estate’s commitment to preserving its unique terroir through precision viticulture and modern vinification techniques culminate in the production of distinctive, high-quality wines.

Vineyards are mapped with a specific satellite monitoring technique that identifies various sections of a vineyard to make better planting direction choices and gather critical information about soils and yields. With the extensive work that goes into graphing, interpreting, and classifying the satellite images gained by Trerose, it was equally as important to expand the estate’s winemaking capabilities — including adding new steel vessels and advanced technologies to aid in winemaking.

Pillars of Sustainability

Tenuta Trerose has built their sustainability initiatives around the key pillars of organic certifications, water conservation, and the equitable treatment of their people. To that end:

From vintage 2021, their vineyards have been certified organic and they’ve also attained the IFS standard certification. In addition, their wines are also all certified vegan friendly. The property’s two reservoirs collect over 50,000 cubic meters of precious rainwater every year, enabling both irrigation of the vineyards and smarty management of all other green areas of the estate. Tenuta Trerose is also committed to creating a stimulating and safe working environment based on equal opportunities and equity for everyone who works there, including the 34 local family businesses and suppliers who collaborate with them daily to provide materials and services to properly manage the entire estate.
