Background

Since 1858, the Fontanafredda Estate & Winery has been instrumental to the growth and international awareness of Barolo, while championing sustainability and community engagement in the Langhe region of Piedmont. Under the lead of visionary entrepreneur, Oscar Farinetti, Fontanafredda has built a portfolio of wines that express the depth and diversity of the Langhe, produced from grapes that are farmed from organic and sustainably managed vineyards. Since the 2018 harvest, Fontanafredda is the largest certified organic winery in Piedmont.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The 250-acre Fontanafredda property in Serralunga d’Alba, a cru site of Barolo, is the single largest contiguous wine estate in the Langhe and includes 247 acres of vineyards, 30 acres of woodland and 10 acres on which the cellars and village buildings lie. Owned vineyards are in the municipalities of Serralunga d’Alba, Diano d’Alba, Barolo, Dogliani, Farigliano, Alba, Rodello, and Murinsengo, at altitudes between 200 - 400m. Grapes for Ebbio are sourced from the hills of Roero and Langhe, from South and South-West-facing vineyards. Soils are composed of calcareous marl, with vines planted at a density of 4,200/ha.

Winemaking & Aging

A blend of 50-50% hole-bunch grapes and crushed, destemmed must are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 82°F, for an average of 10-12 days. The wine ages in wood casks for at least four months and then in the bottle for at least one to two months. Immediately ready to drink upon release, but with aging potential of a three to four years, depending on the vintage.

Tasting Notes

When young, this wine features a fragrance which is wonderfully spontaneous and full of surprise. In its bouquet, color and generous, velvety body this langhe Nebbiolo brings out all the typical qualities of the magnificent vine it is made from. Later in life its color becomes garnet-red with delicate orange shades, and its nose deepens, with traces of withered flowers, such as roses and, above-all, geraniums. Its warm, soft, well-bodied flavor is velvety and well-balanced, lingering in the mouth.
