Background

Mandrarossa wines were born out of a mission for excellence when a team of industry experts joined forces to create high quality wines of both indigenous and international varietals from Sicily to introduce to the world. This team of experts identified top estates that yield the best quality and worked closely with select growers to deliver the truest and highest valued expression of the selected varietals offered by Mandrarossa wines. A Sicilian icon, Cartagho is Mandrarossa's premium wine from a selection of only the best Nero d'Avola vineyards on the estate. Cartagho epitomizes the authenticity of Sicilian elegance.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Ideal microclimatic conditions of intense sunlight, coastal sea breezes and rich chalky soils combine to produce these rich, aromatic wines. The exact planting sites are a result of extensive research performed to analyze the top quality soils at the vineyard.

Winemaking & Aging

Ripe Nero d’Avola grapes are harvested the first week of September. The grapes are destemmed and crushed as soon as they arrive at the winery and then transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters. Fermentation takes place for 10 days at a temperature of 72°-75°F. The yeasts are selected by the winemakers to maintain varietal and regional expression. A system of rack-and-return and traditional pumping over provides gentle extraction of deep color and fine tannins while retaining fruit characters. Post-fermentation maceration, which accentuates the development of soft tannins and a greater degree of complexity in the wine, lasts for 7 days. The wine then matures in French oak barriques for a minimum of 12 months, followed by 4 months of aging in the bottle before it is released.

Tasting Notes

Ruby with purple highlights. Intense aromas of cherries and blackberries. A complex and full-bodied wine with balanced, sweet tannins.

90
Points

A spicy red with dark cherries, rosemary, anise and chocolate orange on the nose. Medium-bodied, soft and creamy with a zesty finish. Drink now. -J.S.

James Suckling - October 2023

90
Points

Aromas of plums, raspberries and strawberries lead the nose, with nuance coming from a dusting of tea leaves and a crackle of pepper. On the palate, things stay fruity, but a coppery clatter of pennies and a rich cup of chili-infused hot chocolate provide provocative undertones. Palm Bay International. —D.C.
