Background

Mandrarossa wines were born out of a mission for excellence when a team of industry experts joined forces to create high quality wines of both indigenous and international varietals from Sicily to introduce to the world. This team of experts identified top estates that yield the best quality and worked closely with select growers to deliver the truest and highest valued expression of the selected varietals offered by Mandrarossa wines. Designed by artist Nancy Rossit, the label of this wine reflects the history of this land though vibrant illustrations of Garibaldi's famous army, led by Colonel Orsini. Garibaldi, considered one of the worlds most famous generals, led the unification of Italy. His volunteer soldiers wore red shirts, in lieu of a uniform.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Mandrarossa Terre del Sommacco hails from luxuriant vineyards where sumac and scarlet flowers grow freely.

Winemaking & Aging

Harvest occurs the first week of September. Maceration and fermentation lasts for 6-8 days at 22-25°C (71-77°F). The wine then matures for 8 months in stainless steel and concrete vats, followed by 19 months in large oak barrels, and a further 8 months in the bottle.

Tasting Notes

Ruby red. Pleasant fruity notes of cherry and blackberry. Soft and fruity, with delicate tannins and vivid freshness.

Fresh, fruity nose; succulent with tangy acidity and lovely balance. A charming wine with huge food-pairing potential.

This incredibly fragrant Nero d’Avola is decidedly savory. Its aromas are very Cuban cigar, crunchy mulberry and dried potting soil. Still, its palate fruit core is decidedly vibrant with rich, drying berry flavors and an impresive tang on the back palate. A darker blackberry tone and a moderately juicy finish lead to a very complete overall impression, whether this is being sipped alone or with food. Like the Bertolino Soprano, this has a good life ahead, and it will be interesting to see which perseveres most gracefully. What is most delightful about this complex red is that it sees no new oak aging.

Made with Nero d'Avola, this opens with aromas of ripe black-skinned fruit, underbrush and baking spice. It’s juicy and balanced, delivering black cherry, crushed plum, clove and star anise fla-vors alongside fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2025.

The 2016 Terre del Sommaco is a dark and powerful expression of Nero d'Avola that mixes crushed blackberries and plums with notes of tobacco and a whiff of salty sea air. Its soft, enveloping textures are nicely balanced by brisk acids, giving way to tart wild berries with an herbal twist. Black fruits, minerals and hints of bitter cocoa linger long through the lightly structured finale. Enjoy the 2016 Terre del Sommaco now or over the next few years.

The limestone slopes near the town of Menfi on Sicily’s southwestern coast enjoy ample sunshine and cooling sea breezes. That’s where the grapes for this wine grew, gaining plummy ripeness while retaining acidity. Notes of cacao and black olive enrich its black plum and raspberry flavors while hints of dried thyme and fennel emerge to balance that richness.
